Sturdy Chair, But Arrived Damaged
The chair is sturdy and attractive, but it arrived with a 1 inch by 1/2 inch gouge in the upper ladder section, as well as a smaller nick at the top of the ladder connecting brace. It was delivered while I was away, and when I arrived home, my husband had already assembled it.I would have shipped it back for a replacement, but he did not want, in his words, "to take it apart and wrestle it back into the box". Apparently, the packaging was quite a challenge. So I have two gouges with almost matching stain to disguise them somewhat! And a chair that was made in Indonesia, according to the box, which is not what I expected when I ordered from "Yankee Sturbridge Workshop".

Nice chair
This is a nice chair which works well. Mine arrived with a couple of chips knocked off--packaging could have been better. The supplied Phillips head screws are an unfortunate choice by the manufacturer, as they tend to strip out and extreme pressure is needed to seat a number of them. A better choice of screws would have been something with a hex head or star drive configuration. All screws, screw driver, etc. were included. The item is constructed from some type of hard wood and the seat easily converts into a step ladder as advertized. Assembly is difficult due to the screw type supplied and the hardness of the wood and is better achieved with two people. Complaints aside, the item is a better quality and price than many competing brands appear to be. I recommend this item in spite of the assembly difficulty.

It's a kit, not a finished piece
This is not a finished piece of furniture. Repeat that after me. It's a kit. I've posted a picture of what it looks like in the box it comes in. Given that, it looks great once put together. Here's an important tip: Don't tighten the hex head bolts until you attach the bottom legs to the chair seat! Once you have it screwed down with the wood screws, then tighten the bolts. If you tighten the bolts first, the screws won't line up. Take it from me.Other than that, once you assemble it (I'm an experienced woodworker, and it still took me about 3 hours), it's a beautiful piece of furniture. My only beef with it is that the plugs that go over the hex bolts don't fit very well - too loose.

CHANGE THE PICTURE-NO GOLDEN COLOR!
CHANGE THE PICTURE, PEOPLE! I wanted the color seen here! And since the choices given are "black'" or "stain" i chose "stain" and figured I'd get the color in the picture. Nope. I got dark mahogany color, and yet the invoice says "stain." Because it does work as a library ladder in the cramped space I needed it for, I assembled it and kept it and checked back on the site to see if I'd made a mistake ordering and could actually obtain, in the future, the color shown. Nope - same picture, but same "stain" or "black" color choices. I wouldn't trust this company again. Color is very important to me - and to most people I know! - when adding furniture pieces to their home, especially ones that cost more than second-hand. It's getting two stars because, practically, it does work, and I did manage to assemble it though directions were confusing, a bit. But I look at it and wish I had the golden oak color that matches my bookcases. This seller is misleading customers with this picture.

While the chair looks nice you could never use it as a step ladder
Nothing lines up! We purchased this chair to use in our kitchen and thought it would be handy to have a step ladder feature. While the chair looks nice you could never use it as a step ladder. I would be afraid to even stand on as a chair. The assembly was very difficult as the holes did not line up properly. We had to drill our own holes in some cases. Bottom line, if you want the step ladder capability or are not handy do not purchase this. I would not purchase this product again nor would I recommend to anyone.

Sturbridge Yankee Workshop
The quality of the wood and staining is great! Upon putting the parts together, I found the corner of one step with the wood split. I reglued it with Elmer's glue but now it shows a crack. I believe this was due to shipping. Packing materials were very loose which resulted to the wood moving inside the box. It looked like the box was previously opened and were not repacked well. I recommend using more bubble pack to fit the box to avoid movement inside.

Library Stair Chair
This is a decent piece of furniture and useful as well. It's bit hard to put together since it appears to have been crudely cut. Often the holes don't quite mesh. And the directions are the usual "English as a second language" translation. But it's all worth it in the end, especially since I have a tiny library, with loads of books but not much space. I doubt I'll ever sit in it, but I do feel safe climbing it to move my books around.

Decent product, but not perfect.
The quality of the wood seems good, but assembly was a different story. I had to drill additional holes to complete the assembly and the plugs that cover the screws don't fit. The constantly fall out. I guess I'll be glueing those in.
