Sanctuary / Suite For Late Summer

I love this CD of two of Dion’s LPs from the early 1970s. Highlights for me are Sanctuary, Sunshine Lady, Running Close Behind You, and Soft Parade of Years. His singing is beautiful on these recordings, tender and soulful with good songs underneath. Dion’s folkie period is my favorite of his catalog, and this CD is beloved in my collection. Highly recommended!

I owned both these albums on vinyl. Bought them when they first came out and fell in love with the nuances of Dion's voice. Followed his music back to the New York streets and his work with the Belmonts. Now, for those who have not heard, he has given us three fabulous albums of blues music that showcase that gift of a voice he still possesses and the skill on guitar that was originally less evident. Dion continues to be vital, and if you are willing to follow his path, you will find he has seldom not been vital. Sanctuary was always on my turntable in 1971 and when I played those songs this morning, I knew every word, every breath, every emotion captured in this LP. The live stuff at the end of the album isn't as interesting, but, man, those first six songs are gorgeous, searching, and peaceful. Suite for Late Summer is a more consistant album, but Sanctuary's opening set of songs is why I keep coming back.

Now I can finally toss my 8-track of this album!! Suite for Late Summer is one of the most beautiful and haunting music from Dion that I have heard. It is a more somber album, definitely not a dance CD, but once heard is never forgotten. It was the summer of 1977 or 78, and I found the 8-track in a bin because cassettes were now the latest thing! I could never get rid of Dion's 8-track. Don't get me wrong, Dion was an artist with Runaround Sue, The Wanderer, and Ruby, and all those tunes that punctuated my early years in the 50's, and I still love his earlier music. But---but--- this album was a departure for him and it showed off his sensitive, full-bodied voice, not to mention the pure poetry of his lyrics. Thank you, Amazon!! My search is over.

I bought this to replace an old vinyl LP I had, and because I love the song "Sanctuary". The majority of this album is well done and very easy to listen too. Easily worth the price.

sanctuary is a good record- a bit flawed- but suite for late summer- oh- ¿you already own a copy of it?- its great ¿eh?- ¿what?- ¿you dont own a copy?- well get one- ¿what?- ¿youre not into acoutisingersongwritery blahblah?- dont worry about that- this is miles above anything clods like james & jackson could ever achieve- its just brilliant music that happens to have an acoustic guitar playing on it- trust me- get it

Only four songs are worth the purchase. The mix of live and recorded was interesting but not enough to purchase.

I had Suite for Late Summer on LP years ago & was pleased to get it again. I have certainly enjoyed both of these titles & they will get played regularly.

Recently, I started to make a (personal) list on Discogs of my favourite records of the early 70s. I might make it public sometime, but not now. And you know what? Suite for Late Summer is on top. I think Dion has one of the best voices in the business, and his Suite is one of the best records I know. Simply beautiful. Forget the lyrics, but let him take you along on his beautiful Indian summer trip. If you like those tinkling and clear guitars (there were some great producers and sound engineers at this time at WB) and those sweeping but modest strings from the late great Nick DeCaro, you'll love this record. For me, it stands next to Gordon Lightfoot's 'Sit Down Young Stranger', another masterpiece from those times. Reprise Records and WB were at their creative peak, with producers like Lenny Waronker, Russ Titelman, Van Dyke Parks and artists like Ry Cooder, Arlo Guthrie, the early Little Feat, Maria Muldaur, Randy Newman, The Beau Brummels, Harpers Bizarre (this was a bit earlier, I know). Everything they touched became, like, gold. And it stayed that way for me.
