will the compressor run in any orientation, including upside down, i.e. installing it on a ceiling?

The compressor is oil-less so you can mount it pretty much any direction, however, mounting it sideways will cause the piston ring to wear faster on one side. Basically the compressor is designed to dissipate heat out of the head of the compressor. Since heat rises, if it were mounted upside down the heat would just run back into the compressors causing it to overheat quickly.

What kind of tubing do I need to run this / connect it to the tank and a staple gun?

Hello Tesa, We recommend using 1/4" DOT approved airline to connect the compressor to the tank. Depending on type of tank you have and the staple gun, there may also be additional fittings required.

Can this be used without a tank? I am interested in installing it on my pontoon and using it to fill floats and toys.

It would be best to have a tank.

Poor choice. Consider other air compressors

I purchased two of these. The first one would not generate any pressure. The second one run fine for about 10 minutes then the plastic pneumatic tubing attached to the included check valve got so hot that it softened and blew a hole in the tube. The whole top of the pump was dangerously hot and would burn your skin before you felt the heat. I'm guessing 5 minute on, 60 minute off duty cycle (with a fan) might be ok with this pump, but that doesn't fit my requirement.
