Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?

Cute pictures and a merry text
When you buy a book for a young child, only buy something that you won't mind reading over and over and over again. I've done that with various children and I still love the book. The words are catching and read almost as a song. The pictures so describe the adventures you have with a toddler

I LOVE this book
I bought this book because it's in the Before Five in a Row preschool curriculum. I am so glad I did! It is a sweet story about a little bear going through his day with his mother at home and then with both parents in the evening, talking about what he wears for each part of the day in verse. It's so fun to read, the pictures are engaging, and I love the depiction of the happy, engaged family. It encourages adventurous eating ("celery crunch and sprouts in a bunch"), outdoor play ("sun on my knees"), play with dad ("my covers that play peek-a-boo") and many other fun things. All my kids (4) have enjoyed it and since I enjoy reading it, we read it again and again.

A wonderful size, and contains the complete story!
This is just a small board book of Carlstrom-Brown's iconic Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear? The contents are catchy, s well as the illustrations. My 21 month old granddaughter is hard on books, so board books are still preferred over regular books at this point. My complaint with most board books that are taken from larger picture books is often parts of the book are removed, for brevity's sake, I suppose. I checked this out of my library before I bought it, because my local bookseller did not carry it in stock, and I wanted to see if it contained the whole story. To my delight, it DID contain the whole story with all of Bruce Degan's wonderful illustrations, so I immediately ordered it to add to my granddaughter's library.

Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear? - a great pairing of author and illustrator
Great for reading aloud - the rhyme and rhythm are delightful to listen to, for adult and child alike and you are carried along from beginning to end. There's a lovely sense of humour - 'I'll wear my chair cos I'm stuck there...' The illustrations are superb and linked to a young child's experiences throughout the daily routine, with lots of detail to explore in the pictures, but not too much e.g. see the spaghetti cooking on the stove. The illustrations are clear and not too busy. It's a wonderful pairing of author and illustrator. The central characters are warm and friendly, and there is a sense of loving feelings throughout. I always find the ending very moving, no matter how many times I read it.One can forgive the sexist bias which seems to reflect the times when it was written or set - daddy bear sitting in his slippers while mummy bear looks after the offspring. This gives opportunity for discussion of the roles of parents, necessary even now in the twenty-first century when daddy is not always the modern man in his thinking or in his attitudes to family life.

Simple rhymes, huge hit!
Bought it as a gift for a friends kid, read it to my 3 year old and he couldn't get enough of it. It's a simple book, has a sing song feel to the rhymes but it was a huge hit with my little guy. Hopefully his friend likes it as much.

Good book!
This is a picture book for young children. It's written in rhyme and while at times it doesn't make sense, it has an appeal to it with its characters and wonderful illustrations. I think such books are important to help develop a child's creativity!
