Q: My cork puller arrived with grease on the prongs. Should that be cleaned off, or has it been applied to aid insertion?

Mine arrived with grease. It's not very visible, but you can feel it, so perhaps the others didn't observe it. According to a German website the grease is intentional and they suggest replenishing form time to time, "The steel prongs are factory-wise treated with a foodfriendly grease and should be lubricated again from time to time with a drop of cooking oil. Please wipe Ah-So dry after every use."

Q: What is the material of the cover/slid that slips over the prongs ?

The cover is metal. Might be stainless steel
