The Gospel According to Jazz, Chapter 1

This is not my first purchase of The Gospel According to Jazz, Chapter 1. It was loaned out in 2004 and never came back. With Kirk's new release of Chapter 4, I decided it was time to replace Chapter 1. Each and every song on this album is great, and while I love Chapter 2, 3 and 4 and play them often, this beginning of the series has a specialness that keeps me playing it some 12 years after its release.

My initial hearing of this CD, Gospel According To Jazz, was at a dinner. It was being played while we ate. The hymns being played in the style of jazz fascinated me. Along with the jazz styling of hymns, the tone, technique and over all performance was outstanding. I asked someone who was playing. I was told Kirk Whalum. I went home and ordered the CD. I am very pleased.

I purchased volume three first and really like it. This one I didn't like as well but after a few listenings it's grown on me. I'll need to test drive volume two before I purchase.

I first came to know Mr. Whalum when he was playing for Whitney Houston. I wanted to know more about his music and came across some while looking at some videos. This gentleman is beyond talented and to cross over to gospel music is just an added plus. This is a must have CD.

I totally enjoy listening to Kirk Whalum and his guests on Chapter 1 while getting ready for work in the morning or driving around town. The music is uplifting, relaxing, and a wonderful way to start the day.

This was a Christmas gift.

K.WHALUMの同タイトルのCHAPTER2を聴いて完全にのめり込み、友人にCHAPTER1も薦められましたが市中のＣＤ屋にあまり流通しておらず、やっと見つけました。こちらのCHAP1もKIRKの甘くて伸びやかなsaxophoneにGEORGE DUKE(keyboard,piano)、Paul Jackson Jr.(guitar)などの超一流どころのミュージシャンのタイトな演奏とGOSPEL隊の素晴らしい絡みが聴けます。GOSPELと言っても泥臭さは全くなく、コンテンポラリージャズのバックコーラスのノリで洗練されてます。P.Jackson Jr.のelectric guitarの音の味付けもカッコよく、すべてのコンテンポラリージャズ（フュージョン）ファンの方々におすすめです。またＬＩＶＥとはいえ、音質も抜群なのでできるだけ高品質なオーディオで聴いてほしいと思います。このアルバムで秋の夜長をじっくり楽しんでください。

この作品に寄せられた先人のレビューを見て、このＣＤを買ってみたが、がっかりしました。　ジャズでもないし、ゴスペル風でもないし、強いて言えば安っぽいＢＧＭというところか。　ＣＤショップのバーゲンセールに、ワゴンに入って１枚３００円程度で売っているＣＤといったところ。ジャズ、ゴスペル、ロック、ＢＧＭ、クラシック全般何でも聴くが、このＣＤにはパワーが無い。格好だけつけようとしている「すかっぺ」みたいなサウンドで終始する。
