Great for Emergencies
I had to get the hang of it but now that I know how to use it, it's great. I keep this with my camping/emergency gear. Would have been great to come with some type of inexpensive case since the mag rubs off black on everything it touches. I'll dig around for a small change purse to keep it in.

...excellent product...works 'very well'...this is the one distributed by Harbor Freight ...magnesium shaves easily and the rod throws nice sparks...I used a different striker that I liked ...

Works, but not easily. Use a BIC lighter
It works after a fashion on a dry work bench.A lot of scraping is necessary to get the quarter-size, 1/8 inch high pile ready to ignite. Then lots of sparks to get the pile going.I had better success with igniting a dry tissue from a tissue packet.For field use, a mini BIC lighter is lighter (0.6 oz vs. 1.6 oz) and easier to use. If you use a BIC, don't keep it in your pants, lest sparks blow you up.
