Q: What is the rated maximum weight ?

Not sure what the max wight is, I'm 6'4 300+ and it has never had any issues even though it's on a carpet. Works especially well if you couple it with larger wheels (I bought 65mm). Was about to throw away the chair, but it works awesome now.

Q: Is the entire base aluminum? No plastic?

Yes, the entire base is aluminum, but has no wheels. Our old wheels are plastic, and that is what we put on.

Q: can this base be used without casters?

No, because the gas tube sticks out from the hole in the base unless you are mounting some other type of chair on the base but your standard office chair has a gas tube that sticks through the hole in the base. Hope this helped!

Q: will this fit my merax racing gaming chair?

If the diameter of the cylinder on your chair is 2" it will fit.
