They keep my earrings in place & more importantly secure by them locking onto the stem until you release the mechanism to remove them. No issues with them coming off even while sleeping. I have used them on two different pairs of studs. One pair is a screw back type and these earring backs also lock onto those stems without an issue. I have used them with & without the optional PVC retainer. They are pricey but it's a small price to pay to keep from losing my expensive studs.
