We do use a number of standard bulking agents, as is used widely in the food industry, the purpose of which is to add volume to enable a tablet to be made (otherwise supplements containing several ingredients provided in micronutrients would simply be too small to manufacture). A bulking agent or filler is essentially a ‘carrier’ for the active ingredients. All of our bulking agents are non-toxic and are therefore safe for human consumption. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is, for example, a form of cellulose gum naturally occurring in the cell walls of plants. While these ingredients are primarily used as bulking agents, the cellulose is used as part of our sustained-release formula to delay the release of the active ingredients and increase uptake of the nutrients. We also use a number of standard excipients (termed ‘flow agents’) that are ubiquitous in supplement manufacturing, as they are necessary to reduce resistance during processing.
