An inexpensive way to get into solar powered hydro
I was very intrigued by the Growmanji kit, especially after watching Youtube. I considered getting one but then I found that I could get just the pump and panel without the growing kit. This is a much cheaper option that makes more sense if you want to experiment or build your own setup. I ordered one from Amazon and it came pretty quickly in a neat little box. Inside the box was a small 6 volt solar panel, a simple pump that appeared to be housed in a pvc pipe, a small round airstone of good quality and an airline with a check valve. The build of the panel was pretty good but the lead wires going from the connection box on the panel to the power cable could have used more strain protection. One thing I did not see or somehow missed was a stand for the panel although there are four mounting holes on the back. I made a stand out of spare lamp hanger and hooked it into two of the four holes so it would stand at an angle. It now sits on top of my cfl fixture in front of the south window waiting for the sun. Before I did that I postioned the panel directly on the west window. When the sun shown late afternoon on that window, I got good power and the pump aerated vigorously in a teabottle set up to observe the bubbling. However if it clouded over the pump would stop. If it was partially cloudy or if the sun began to set, the bubbling rate would slow down and stop or speed up when the sun peeked through the clouds. It was fascinating to watch but it illustrated the shortcomings of having just one solar panel for two windows so I ordered another unit. Having two pumps and panels also expands the potential for aerating larger containers. For Growmanji kit owners they can get spare parts. For anyone else who wants to experiment with small scale solar hydroponics and keep the cost down, this is the way to go.

Five Stars
Works great, produces a lot of aeration.
