Great filter, fits the Zen perfectly, and catches all kinds of nasty sludge!
This is a genuine replacement filter for the Zen system. It is amazing how much this thing catches. My water *looked* clear, but the yellowish sludge that forms on this ceramic filter tells me there is a whole lot of gunk in that water--gunk I was drinking, cooking with.... The Zen system is easy to use and more economical than Brita--AND it is more effective. Really glad to have found this, and happy Amazon has the replacement pieces. Just be sure to keep it clean--wipe it with a damp paper towel every other week. Don't scrub it--that will pack the gunk into the filter and clog it up. Edit 6/20/16: just cleaned the filter by wiping it with a damp paper towel. With very light pressure, I cleaned off some ugly brown sludge. I've included a picture of the dirty paper towel just so you can see what this filter pulled from my "clean" tap water.

Excellent for sulfur water
UPDATE: Still love it. These last longer than I expected; the flow rate of the filter decreases as the pores fill up with bacteria and debris, but if I remove and clean mine regularly, they continue to work quite effectively. I clean mine roughly once a month with either a surgical scrub brush or a (dedicated) Dobe pad, and it lasts several months longer than the suggested six-month changing interval. When you clean yours, just make sure you do it with water: no soap, no disinfectants. And no used scrubbing pads, please! ORIGINAL REVIEW: This filter is one of the few contraptions that gets rid of the sulfur odor in my water. Carbon and other filters barely make a dent, but the ceramic pores are apparently small enough to block sulfur bacteria. Love it.

Easy, less expensive, ideal for our use
I cannot give this 5 stars simply because I have not used it yet. I bought it as a spare for a 5 gallon bucket homemade version of a Berkey filter that we made for when we go camping. The camp site we like to go to has only a small stream near by for water, and we needed an easy, inexpensive way to make it drinkable. This definitely fits that bill.

Have reviewed the Zen Filtration System already
We have used this filtering system for nearly 4 years. This is a replacement part for use in water filtering. WE had this is building built in 1908 and now in modern building. The filter need to be replaced every 6 to 8 months. We usually do at 6 months. In older building it accumulated yellow gunk on outside. The dome required scrubbing about every 2 weeks. If not done water will not drain though it well. It takes about 10 minutes and some elbow grease. But the end result is great tasting water. Also do not need to replace filter frequently like some other systems. In new building with out iron pipes it takes about 4 weeks between scrubbing. We have found that it works as advertised. I bought Zen not other because original manufacturer and no price difference.

Watch out for the Porosity Sensitiveness of the Micro-Ceramic Filter!
The best Micro-Ceramic Filter ever with a Pore size of 0.2 to 0.5 micron (human hair is 40 to 300 microns) However, when I first installed it, I made the mistake of scrubbing it with a lot of pressure with a hard sponge, little I knew I had blocked the sensitive porosity of the filter. I was disappointed, the amount of water that went though it was less than a gallon in a whole day. Then, after reading thoroughly all the instructions, I understood what I stated before, I had blocked the filter's pores. Luckily, I had ordered an extra filter, which I replaced it for the first one. This time I scrubbed it softly with a wet bounty paper towel. A week later, I did scrub it softly again in the same manner to remove all the dirt attached to it. The experience it is still satisfying, I have lots of filtered, clean and mineralized water. Hydrolize yourself up!

Do not buy- Amazon needs to look into issue!
I had been using this type of filter for years bought from Amazon. I bought one recently that was so bad with horrid off gassing of what smelled like bug spray even after repeatedly following all the steps to get rid of the smell (manufacturer knew of the issue) that I had to return it. This was better but now even after 3 of use when I open the top of the Santivia gravity feed system that smell of off gassing jumps out. You buy these to keep toxins out of your body but these are adding them. Thinking of reaching out to the CPCA- Amazon needs to investigate seems like some kind of scam is going on with the suppliers that supply these brands. And this one was 4x the cost of the last one on a per unit basis. My guess is they are using material they know must never be used in food safe products. Also I don't dump tap water into the Santevia- the water I put in has always been through an Watts RO system and then through a Meghome distiller- so it is already clean water.

Cleans the iron out of my water
I have water that has very, very high iron content. The water looks red coming out of the well. I have run 1000's of litres through this filter and the water on the other side comes out crystal clear. In my case, I simply need to scrub wash the filter after each use (approx 25litres), and it's as good as new. I'm sure others who don't have iron laden water can get away with barely ever washing the filter. I've read that these are fragile, but mine has been going strong with no issues.
