... followed The Kills throughout their career you know how great they are
If you have followed The Kills throughout their career you know how great they are. They have a sound unlike anyone else. Even though this was their first studio album I actually heard it after Midnight Boom, Keep on Your Mean Side, and Blood Pressure. I'm glad I did because this album is not great on its own. Had I heard this one first I still would have liked it but I probably wouldn't have been eager to buy anything else from them and that would be a shame because those 3 albums I mentioned before are incredible!!! But as a fan I love this album. It's cool to see how much they have progressed since making it. And although the album as a whole is a bit monotonous the title song "No Wow" is well worth listening to and still one of their greatest songs to date. You won't hear anything else like The Kills, I suggest buying all 5 of their albums and turning up the volume.

The Best New Music I have Heard in Years!!!
As a professional musician I have really kept my ear open for new music--outside of any genre. The Kills fit that category, plus they are great! Unlike another reviewer, I was introduced to No Wow first. "No Wow" was used on the soundtrack of a fantastic CBS series that is now on Netflix, called Person of Interest. It begins the 5th and last season."No Wow" fit perfectly, and I watch often with CC on, so the name of the track and band is often included. This was my introduction to the album, and later, other albums....a band with a unique sound that covers now 5 albums. A great find!

like two close friends who are teasing each other but ...
They wanted to do a lot of it on an original Moog synthesizer but the darned thing crapped out just before they got to the studio so it was back to Jamie’s guitar. They took two weeks writing the songs and three to record them, so the album has a raw, almost live concert feel. There is also a different tone to No Wow. It’s tensely sexual, like two close friends who are teasing each other but have no intention of taking it any further because they know doing it wouldn’t be nearly as good as their imaginations. In fact I Hate the Way You Love is a pretty clear indicator. I’m working on getting this on vinyl because so far all of the albums have been superior on wax.

That rare slap to the face you never think you need....and then it finds you.....
Soaked in primordial sludge, this swift electric kick to the teeth beautifully, stunningly spits in the face of everything that I thought was possible in contemporary music; a velvety swath of brilliance, choking on the fumes of its own black exhaust. These two musicians managed to produce a sound at once familiar and yet tangibly unique, all in the same breath.I recall picking the album up on a lark back in 2005. When I went to play it, not paying any attention, I started with side two and when I dropped that needle on "At The Back Of The Shell", I froze where I stood, having no concept of what I was hearing. It was a kind of ear candy, suspending me in disbelief at what I can only describe as one of a very few select listening experiences of my life. To this day, the only way I can listen to this album is side two first. It had that kind of affect on me. That I introduce it to people in that fashion is a testament its lasting impression. Now, I understand that my opinion as expressed here is clearly biased, but all I can say is that this album is a very rare piece of music that has that kind of affect.....and I just had to be honest.

Not Wowed
Definitely not nearly as strong as their first release. Other than a couple of worthwhile songs, the CD fell flat.

Buy this album somewhere else.
I bought this cd when it was originally released. That copy is a bit scratched, though, and two of the songs don't play. I saw the cd listed on Amazon for $4 and got excited. But this new cd doesn't have the same sound as the cd I bought in 2005. The older disc has a sharper, more dynamic sound. I noticed it immediately. That's kind of hard to believe, so I put the new disc into the changer alongside my copy from 2005 to test. And yes, the older No Wow cd has a better sound than the newer No Wow cd. Now I know why Amazon sells it so cheap.Of course, No Wow is a great album, and the Kills are a great band, so I'm still giving it three stars. And if you only listen to music on your ipod, on shuffle, through little ear buds at the gym, then I guess you won't care much about the sound anyway. But is that really how you want to do it?Myself, I'm sorry that I bought a cd on Amazon. I should have known better, and it serves me right. I'll be keeping my eye out for an old copy to show up used at a real record store. You should do the same.

I've loved this album for what it seems like 10yrs now and always go back to it. I needed a new cod copy and found it for a fairy affordable price on Amazon. I also got the digital copy for my cloud and couldn't be more happy reminiscing on an old favorite.
