Look no further for a magnesium fire starter!
I must say this is the best magnesium fire starter I've found by far. I've had many different "square" fire starters that you buy online, in stores, etc and all the ones I've tried the scraper bar doesn't work well, the bar is small and hard to hold on to for scraping shavings, and the included metal rod doesn't scrape well at all.Now look at the Survivor fire starter, what a difference! The magnesium is much softer and easier to scrape off, the included metal rod actually scraped off a large amount of shavings very quickly as compared with the square ones. It literally took me 20 seconds to get a pile of shavings the size of a nickel that would sufficiently light most dry tenders. I will also say that the rod for producing sparks works extremely well, it ignited the magnesium the very first try. I must say this is by far the easiest to use, best magnesium fire starter I've tried, well worth the $25 and is a must buy for those building a survival kit or looking to go camping/outdoors. The magnesium simply shaves off very easily and this fire starter works great! The included mirror on it is a bonus for signaling and the thermometer and compass as well. I haven't tested the accuracy of the compass but the thermometer was quite accurate from my tests, within 1 degree of my indoor thermometer. Although some may not like the larger size of this as compared to the square magnesium bars, the ease of use and the results will make the extra size well worth it when out in the bush.

The truth about Magnesium Firesteels
Not all Magnesium Firesteels are created equal. I have used a few of the bar style from multiple manufacturers with mixed results. The higher the magnesium content the better it works. This seems like a statement which should be self explanatory but not everyone shares the same thought process. Anyway, this product claims 99% magnesium. As well as it works I believe this to be true. The magnesium shaves off much easier than the Chinese mag bars. The key is to try your gear before you depend on it. Not sure I would put a lot of trust in the compass and thermometer but lets face it, if you are spending the amount for a magnesium firesteel as you are considering to pay for this one you probably have a much better compass in your gear already. Speaking of price, this is why I gave it 4 stars versus 5. I believe that some of the mag bars a comparable if you choose a good quality USA made bar, like the DOAN mag bar.

read this review before you make a decision.
This is a good product the magnesium is soft and the flint is fine the problem is with the blade it comes with.it is not sharp enough you have to do three times the work to get a good result of that of a good striker.i used the one that came with my national geographic brand magnesium block and it was a huge difference magnesium came off much easier and the flint through alot more sparks.the compass works fine the thermometer does to.all in all its a fine product but it is not functional as it comes. Unless you buy or make a new scraper.I emailed the company that makes this product and told them the problem I was having they never responded. update: the owner of the company emailed me back and said he would send me a few new blade as soon as possible. I can recommend the product now knowing the customer service is good.

Your gonna love it!
This really is what they said is a great firestarter. The magnesium is soft enough to pull off with the provided striker the Flint produces a good spark. It's larger size and girth make it easier to handle I have used a Doan's a bar and a few other types of fire steel. And I found for ease of use an all-around performance this more than equals the others that I've used. I would buy it again when one day I finally wear this thing out. Jerry and customer service is great to deal with and talk to on the phone rapid response to any questions .:thanks guys keep it going!

a great tool to use in survival situation
Saw this fire starter on YouTube, decided to give it a try. Comes with a compass and thermometer. It can be submerged into water to check water temperature too, a great tool to use in survival situation. Added it to my survival kit. Will update it further after I give it a try.

Very Good Magnesium - Mediocre Ferro Rod
Magnesium is soft and easy to scrape off. The ferro rod is just okay. The unit is a bit large for a pack, but it does have a backup compass and a thermometer in the handle, so I'm a bit torn on the overall usefulness of this unit over having discreet pieces of equipment. I like it for starting campfires and playing around, but would likely not take it on a multi-day hike.

It started a fire
I started a fire with it which is all that really matters. The thermometer fell out when I opened the package, nothing a drop of super glue won't fix. The flint and magnesium are very thick and will last you years.

Fantastic Item!
This thing is a beast, everything you see on youtube or reviews i can back up as 100%.. Puts doans to shame and the ferro rod + striker is king! I plan to buy more as backups, although i don't foresee wearing this thing out any year soon.. Fantastic Item!! huge thumbs up.. (worked on wet tinder and dried it out + ignited first shot)!!!
