The hard plastic shells make a crisper sound than paper mache or gourds or whatever. And they must be filled with metal pellets or buckshot- not rocks or beans. At least they sound like it. They really cut through the volume of a large brass band. Since they are so symmetrical in construction, it's easy to get softer, swishier, rounder sounds from them, especially when they are held upside down when played. And they seem very sturdy. I have used them as beaters on the bottom of a large, upside down, plastic trash can (our bass drum player was absent). They held up well. But I see the plastic head is attached to the comfortable wooden handle with only three rivets (is it glued also?) so I do not recommend this type of rough use.
