They have an elastic all the way around and stay tucked under the mattress on the corners (but they could be a bit longer on the sides). I was disappointed with the softness. To call these sheets sateen or 600 thread count isn't quite right. They just feel like regular cotton sheets but not really soft like sateen would be or what you would expect from 600 thread count sheets. The only negative is that the sheets have a somewhat rough feel to them. This is probably because they are made from "open-end spun" yarns, which is how almost all yarn is produced now. If you want a really smooth fabric, you should look for "ring-spun" yarn.
