Does this serve a different purpose than a knit picker? Is there any reason to have both tools?

a knit picker works only if you have a loop that you can catch and pull to the backa snag it is for fabrics that have a snag with no distinct loop. using the barb you can pull the snag to the back. i own and use both tools.

what is the difference between the Dritz Snag Nab It tool for almost $5 and one in the 'outside ' vendors listed, one is $2?

You can get the Dritz at Hobby Lobby for $2.99 every day. I love this for all fabrics woven or knit and it will even tuck in a stray thread, doesn't have to be a snag.

Does this work well for polyester and chiffon?

Great for poly. Not sure about chiffon. Also good for crocheted things

These are absolutely excellent, any little snag on your clothes

These are absolutely excellent, any little snag on your clothes, if you hate sewing as I do, just push through and the snag sticks to the 'rough' part of the needle, no problem and takes it through to the reverse side, problem solved, brilliant product, so pleased to have found it here, haberdashery looked at me as if I was nuts, my Mum always used one, thats how I got the idea.
