Treknor Orienteer Deluxe Map Compass

I'm a Boy Scout leader, so I'm frequently teaching scouts about orienteering. In theory, this compass is well designed for the sort of basic orienteering that the scouts learn. Particularly, it is easier to find and dial in particular bearings than other compasses in the same price class.However, upon receiving this compass I found it lacking in quality. The compass I received had a small air bubble. The turnable compass housing turned a little too easily and didn't seem to be as securely set in the base plate.

I bought this compass to revive my land navigation skills and to give my daughter some idea on how to get around in the woods.This compass has everything that I need to do just that. A huge benefit is that the reference materials explain things using this style of compass. So, there is no translation required.Solidly built. Should be great in harsh weather. I love the needle damping. It seems a perfect balance between fast orientation but slow enough to read accurately. The bezel rotates smoothly and seems solidly fastened.The only feature I wish it had was some sort of way to fix the declination so that I could set it before going out and forget about it. Sure, it has a declination scale but that just one more thing for a beginner (like me) to have to think about while in the field.

Good starter compass for kids
