Thank you for your question. The child needs to a know little bit of subtraction to enjoy this game. Most kids learn it at the age of 6 and up. Unless the child is a very quick learner and ahead of the class, I would recommend you look at Ocean Raiders - the addition game. This is an easier game and more appropriate for kids turning 5. Q: My kiddo is struggling to master counting backwards from "higher" numbers ( 12 and up). Does this help with counting down from at least 20?

Hello, the game has subtraction of 2 digits to 1 digit number. The largest number is 50. This should help in backward counting of larger numbers.
