The link below shows that the compound is .5 micron Chromium Oxide. Wet the leather and rub the stick on the leather as it is turning. Add as required.http://www.worksharptools.com/woodworking/woodworking-sharpener/parts-and-accessories-woodworking/work-sharp-3000-leather-hone-kit.html **Q: Could you put this on a six flat disc sander (like one you would find on a belt sander)?** A: it is a leather stuck onto a glass disc, not sure how you would secure that to a vertical sander, would leave the glass edge exposed to chipping I think.using it in a vertical position **Q: is there leather on both sides of the disk?** A: The leather is only on one side of the disk. **Q: What is the dimensions? 10.3X8.2X2.7 doesn't seem correct?** A: The hone kit is essentially the same float glass plate or plates that come with the Work sharp unit. It is 6 inches in diameter and 1/2 inch thick, minus the leather. You would be advised to buy another plain tempered glass disk and go to a leather shop or boot maker and get a nice piece of thick split leather and make up your own. The leather on mine was so rough and poorly dimensioned for thickness and made my tool bounce around on it when using it. I had to glue a new one on, hair side up, and it works very well now. Just make sure that what you buy has been been run through splitter and about as thick as a heavy work belt for your pants. I am using it to hone my carving ... *by K***R on 20 May 2016* Received the kit today and installed it. Read the "negative" reviews before buying about the leather being bumpy. No problem, a couple of minutes with a sanding block and it was trued up. I did not expect the leather to be perfectly true to the disc since it comes from an animal and the folks who make leather are not machinists. Works GREAT! I am using it to hone my carving gouges. Puts a very nice mirror finish on the tools. I have been using the WS3000 for a couple of years but had not got around to using it for the carving tools. Should have bought this much sooner. No matter how you cut the mustard, this is a good deal. A blank glass disc costs about $20, for $4 more you get the leather. Several posters complained that it should have been included in the machine package. Not so fast, I did not need it for doing my chisels. Nor do most people who only use it for chisels. So why should they pay an extra $25? Then have something laying around that they do not use?
