In the 1950s, when R&B vocal groups were a major commercial genre, there was no group as successful as The Platters. No group enjoyed the consistency of hits they enjoyed or the enviable crossover success, placing hits on the R&B and pop charts with regularity. The group also enjoyed a far greater international fame than any other R&B vocal group of their era. This was of course achieved by a thorough embracing of pop music giving them the appeal not seen since the heyday of The Ink Spots and The Mills Brothers. This 2CD set features five original LPs all in stereo: 'Remember When', 'Reflections', 'Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries', 'Encore of Broadway Golden Hits' and 'Song For The Lonely'. 12 charting hits including "Red Sails In The Sunset", "If I Didn't Care", "Remember When" and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". Fully detailed liner notes covering their career.

TIME$LESS APPEAL
The Platters: “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” (Jasmine JASCD 820) presents this hugely successful R & B vocal group in five stereo Mercury albums dating from between 1959 and 1962. The titles reflect their themes, namely “Remember When?”; “Reflections”; “Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries”; “Encore of Broadway Hits”; and “Song for the Lonely”. Together they total 60 tracks, virtually all of which should be familiar to today’s listeners. The timeless simplicity of the Platters’ harmonisations, and adept choice of material, appealed not only to the then new generation of doo-wop and rock & roll fans, but also to their parents and grandparents. Many of these tracks were released separately and attained hit single status, and they are identified in the comprehensive track list, together with personnel and lead vocals. My only reservation is that some of the songs would have benefited from a more up-tempo treatment, but I doubt that will deter their many fans.

The Platters Are The Best Of The Best
The Platters are the best vocal group of the 1950s. I own all of their lps and many of their cds. All of the members of the group have good singing voices. Their lead singer Tony Williams is as one reviewer said reviewing another of their cds "Tony Williams is a vocal god". I own several of the cds from Jasmine and they all sound great considering that the source of their releases are from lps.
