Bought it for the art, was not disappointed.Gives character designs at the end, which I appreciate very much.Ending in the same book -> Don't have to read multiple volumes because it all starts and ends in the same book (Omnibus OP).Asuka best girl.

Love most of the spin offs from NGE
Love most of the spin offs from NGE, and while I had thought this was one of the harder ones to digest, I've found others that make this a lot more palatable in terms of story.

Definitley a fun read but the ending was unsatisfying and the characters were a bit stale in some sections.

Disappointing Start, Phenomenal Ending
This is probably the best and most focused spinoff manga of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The new ideas are notable, but the plot becomes terribly convoluted. The state of the battle between the main 4 and the angels, Nerv itself, the relationship between the Evas and their wielders...All of it is so very difficult to understand, probably because the pacing is so rushed. Everything is trying to be condensed into a four volume manga, and the story runs aground as having too much material for its own good. Even the ending itself had very little buildup to that point, and the Evas as weapons are not nearly as interesting as the originals. However, what made this series stand apart were two things: Kaworu and the ending. Kaworu has a very important role, even if the manga explains it rather poorly, and his characterization is some of the best for that character to date. The ending is such a big twist that it makes this series worthy of being considered canonical to the original manga and anime. You-know-who pulls out such a great conflict at the end that I saybthe series is worth it just for that. Now, the worst part has got to be the art. The characters are pretty enough, but their expressions are typically blank and emotionless, and the backgrounds disappear quite often. Add that to the rushed story, and it seems quite obvious that everything for this spinoff was rushed. It's worth a look, and maybe even a buy for the hardcore Eva fan, but I will not be adding this one to my collection anytime soon. Take my word as you see fit.

Collects all 4 volumes of this mini-series spin-off. A nice omnibus edition with colour pages at the beginning of each volume and paper a bit nicer than what you find in viz's omnibus editions. I've read the original Evangelion series, but am not a super fan or anything like that so can't really go in-depth about characters, etc. However, this is a very different take on the series and is set prior to the original series and basically takes a completely different spin on the story It's still science fiction but no giant mecha fighting machines. Shinji and Kaworu are the main character emphasis and the story is based on "angels" (the enemy) inhabiting human bodies. I really enjoyed the story though I found at points it seemed to have continuity problems. It was fun to revisit all the characters even if they were presented differently, they still had the same basic personalities. While this is still a serious story, it is certainly much lighter than the immensely heavy original series. I don't watch anime so am only speaking from a reader's pov, but I found this a worthwhile read and entertaining reimagining of the series.
