Works for rats!
I have pet rats. I knew they vocalize ultrasonically, but I had never heard it. Now I know -- they are as noisy as birds when they play, I could just never hear them. They must think I'm deaf.I found out that you make ultrasonic sounds when you rub the tips of your fingers together. Using this device, I've learned to make a sound very similar to their chirps by gently rubbing my thumb and pointer finger. I can get their attention now without stressing them out, which is awesome.I was also surprised to find what stuff in my house makes ultrasonic noise. My wireless router practically screams all the time. More avoided stress for ratty friends, and kind of cool in its own right. The case is just 3D printed, but is plenty strong enough for everyday use as long as you don't abuse it. The internal electronics seem to be well designed. It doesn't seem to have a problem with interference from audible frequency noise in a room, but was sensitive to ultrasonic and near-ultrasonic when I tested it with a phone app. Given that this is a small fraction of the cost of every other bat detector out there, it is a very good value.

Not worth the price
Much much smaller and much more cheaply made than I had expected. Bought it as a birthday gift for my daughter, but am hoping to have to find something else to supliment it. Absolutely not worth the $30 price, feel very unhappy

Experience the secret world of bats!
This is a fun device, for a reasonable price. I am what the Brits would call a "bat enthusiast" and there's nothing better than spending some time observing them at dusk from my deck on a summer evening. This bat detector takes the ultrasonic echolocation calls that they use to find their insect prey, but which are too high a frequency for humans to hear, and steps down the frequency to one we can hear. The patterns of the calls (different for every species of bat) are retained so you can hear the clicks, trills and feeding buzzes clearly. The only problem I found is that the built-in speaker is too quiet and it's hard to hear well. But, the unit has a headset jack which I use to attach a small external, self-powered, volume-adjustable speaker with a standard 3.5mm double-male end headphone jack. That way, I can adjust the volume to whatever I need. Teach your children, and your friends, about another fascinating aspect of our natural world by having a bat-watching event before summer ends. Here in western NY, we probably have another month or so of bat activity before they head off to their winter hibernation sites. Further south, you've got more time to study these wonderful animals.

Reasonably priced and works surprisingly well !
Reasonably priced and works well ! Oviously not a Peterssen or prof'l grade instrument, it works far better than I expected, good for bat observations pretty far off, and differentiates calls well enough for basic educational fun. Cheap enough I don't fret about tossing it in my pack and bringing it along whenever.

Not just for detecting bats
You can easily explore the ultrasonic world. For example, you can easily hear the ultrasonic sounds of merely rubbing your fingers together. You can hear a dog whistle. You can hear the ultrasonic audio noise (unrelated to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation) emitted from some LED lightbulbs. You can discover sounds that you don't notice, but which might bother your dog.The included efficient speaker means no need to drag along a headset. Great when I need to follow the occasional fluttering flying night critter. And I don't have to tweak any circuitry controls such as a BFO (a hetrodyne beat frequency oscillator), just turn on the power. Two quibbles that won't diminish my rating this product with 5 stars: • It'd be nice to have a power-on LED indicator, or maybe an auto-shutoff after say 20 minutes. • The audio is too muted through any plug-in headset that I've tried. I am content to use the built-in speaker.Great product for us amateurs!

Great for listening to bats!
I have been looking for something like this for years! These are great- pocket sized, simple tech, and they work! The battery cover needs some design work (it falls off sometimes), but otherwise, I love this.

At bat interpretations, it helps the kids to understand bats and to id the bat sounds by ear. Simple operation turn it on and point it at the bats. Point the speaker at the listener. The only minor issue is the microphone. It is small and not marked and subject to be covered by the hand holding it. Well worth the price.
