These round boxes are often called "colonial boxes' and were made in the colonies before the Shakers arrived. But the Shakers did indeed make round as well as oval boxes. Their contribution to the art of round box making are the hand cut swallow tail fingers. These boxes are as utilitarian today as they were 250 years ago. Smaller ones are used to hold rings or jewelry while medium small ones are often used in the kitchen to hold salt, pepper, and other spices. The largest of the round boxes are used stacked as decorative items while holding, correspondence, Christmas cards and letters, newspaper clippings and other memorabilia. The Shakers also made rectangular boxes with hand cut dovetail corners and handles of bentwood. Their water buckets are works of art with subducting swallowtails.
