This is one of the greatest statements of the early days of American punk rock. Boston-based Mission of Burma created an intense, somewhat claustrophobic sound that was based neither on speed nor brevity. They bash and flail on their instruments, and the music is dense (including early tape manipulations), but the songs are intelligent and captivating. "Secrets" unfolds into directed chaos with an anthemic feel; "Trem Two" also has a great sense of dynamics. Several band members contribute songs, which also keeps the album engaging. Released in 1982 but still fresh. --Robert Gordon

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

One of my favorite '80s albums

*by C***E on May 16, 2015*

I love this album! I missed it when it came out - they seem to have been mostly a regional band. I found out about them from the book, Our Band Could Be Your Life, which I highly recommend. Mission of Burma is hard to categorize, but I liked this album more with each listen. I listened to it once a day for a week. It is now one of my favorite '80s albums.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    Art punk with guts.

*by M***E on August 16, 2015*

This record was probably pretty revolutionary when it was first released, and it still totally holds up today despite the countless imitators. I haven't heard melody and hardcore punk mixed this well aside from perhaps Husker Du, and I think that I slightly prefer Mission of Burma. This record gets my blood pumping every time I listen to it!
