Everyone Knows it's a Classic!
The real question is why wouldn't this be in someone's music collection. This album is essential, especially if u call yourself a fan or R&B. Any soul collection is not complete without this masterpiece. It's THAT essential! Looking past the critical acclaim, this album speaks for itself. Here you have an ambitious, risk taking, young Stevie Wonder baring his soul and rewriting the rules of Soul music throughout two discs. Even more shocking, is the lack of filler on this 2 disc set. All of the tracks are great."Sir Duke" and "I Wish" were the big singles from this album. They both reached #1 on the pops. But the other songs are just as good --if not better-- than those two. The truth is there is SO much variety in this double release. "Village Ghetto Land" is emotionally stirring. I absolutely LOVE "Joy Inside My Tears". It's so moving that I am left in awe every time I hear the song...I must've listened to it several times already. With a release this legendary, you can bet that even the album tracks and non-singles reach a level of classic status and here they do. "Isn't She Lovely", with it's phenomenal harmonica solo is a highlight as is the touching love song "As". These are tracks that were played on the radio and represent Stevie at his best.I could go on & on but I'd be repeating myself and other reviewers. Just like Carole King and "Tapestry", MJ and "Thriller" & Prince with "Dirty Mind" this is an album that reaches near mythic status. ALL the songs are good. The lyrics bend the genre of Pop and reimagine R&B, The vocals are passionate and not overbearing. There is REAL emotion here and this represents everything music should be. "Songs in the Key of Life" represents the epitome of a classic album and its importance and greatness cannot be overstated. 5/5 stars. Highly recommended.

A Whopper of a Masterpiece
Here's Stevie at his best. This 1976 double album went to No. 1 on the charts and won the Album of the Year Grammy in 1977. Maybe nobody better combined pop riffs with social consciousness. Stevie Wonder also used the synthesizer with more versatility and taste than anyone else. The album kicks off with "Love's In Need of Love Today", a beautifully plaintive cry for more gentleness in a cruel world. "Village Ghetto Land" echoes George Harrison's "Little Piggies" on the Beatles' White Album with its combination of a Baroque theme and lyrics dripping with sarcasm. "Contusion" is a brilliantly complex yet catchy instrumental. "Sir Duke", a number 1 hit, is a joyful tribute to Duke Ellington. "I Wish" is the other No. 1 hit, a funky reminiscence of childhood bad behavior. "Isn't She Lovely", a song about his newborn daughter, has about as hooky a hook as is possible. "If It's Magic", backed only by a harp, with a short harmonica coda, is one of the most beautiful and poignant songs ever written. The MP3 package has four bonus tracks that apparently came on a single packaged with the original double album in some versions of the release, but not with the one I got back in the day. "Saturn" is wonderfully loopy song about going back to the planet Saturn, much like the BeeGees wanted to go back to Massachusetts even though they'd never been. "Packing my bags, going away to a place where the air is clean on Saturn...We don't fight our wars the way you do; we put back all the things we use on Saturn." I wonder if this was influenced by jazz master-weirdo Sun Ra, who claimed to be from Saturn. "All Day Sucker" has a nice treat of a melody, and we close off with "Easy Goin' Evening", a well-named instrumental featuring the harmonica. I never picked up the CD version of this album and haven't played my vinyl in years, so it was really nice to relive this masterpiece on iTunes this fall.

A True Classic
I bought this album for what I'd consider a strange reason: Every week, I watch American Idol, and very often someone sings a Stevie Wonder song. It never sounds very good, and the judges always say "you'll never compare well with the great Stevie..." Knowing some of the major hits, and generally associating him with "I Just Called to Say I Love You" and "Superstition," I decided I must not be getting the full picture. I was thinking of getting a greatest hits comp, but ultimately decided to try a different route: I'd buy two of his masterpieces. I wanted to see the whole picture, rather than just hear the radio hits. So I bought Innvervisions and Songs in the Key of Life. Holy cow did I make the right choice. It took me only one marathon listening session of both albums to hear what I'd been missing all these years. Many critics and reviewers indicate the album has a slow start, taking a few songs to kick into gear. True, the first songs are slower in pace, but I'd hardly consider it a "slow start." More like: Stevie eases you into a place that you're going to be (and want to be) for a long time (at two LPs and an EP - this really is an epic). With so many songs, I'll only mention a few for brevity's sake: "Sir Duke" is about as danceable a song as I've ever heard while still being substantial. "Black Man" is a history lesson everyone should hear, and examples of important people in American history of many races are mentioned: black, brown, yellow, and white as well. "As" gets under your skin on first listen and never lets go.If I could stress one thing about this album, it would be this: These songs are ABOUT something. It's not funk music about wanting to get funky. It's not R&B about sex. Sure, sex and dancing are in there. But so are IDEAS, politics, social theory, parental love, fear, hope, and much more. The music, the singing, and the lyrics work absolutely. And they don't sound "dated" at all. That is no small achievement. Few artists have ever reached this level, and few ever will. So, as a late-comer to the cult of Stevie, I'm happy to say: Better late than never!

Surprised at the quality
The vinyl seemed heavier than what I was expecting. Came with a booklet. Sounds better than my scratched original. Overall satisfied with my purchase.
