American Art Since 1945 (World of Art)

got this for a class. actually enjoyed reading it. had a good overview of this particular time period giving more information of the artists and what was going on during that time period.

American Art Since 1945 tackles a period of art that is drenched in social and cultural change. Post WW2 art forms are about breaking out, exploring, and defining new forms of creativity & expression. Yet this book is so dry and academic it fails to draw the reader in or excite. Instead the author repeats his few insights over and over and over. Then he repeats what he just said. And then he states it differently yet again. His writing style comes across like an undergraduate's; written with thesaurus in one hand and keyboard (or pen) in the other. The author tries much too hard to sound like & prove he's learned. That said, the book is well illustrated. And the text (style that it is) ties in to the images. But I think that true experts should be able to use accessible, exciting language to make even dry subjects (not this art, for sure!) fun to delve into and read about...this author didn't do that for me.

The textbook arrivedwithin the timeframe quoted. It was in new condition and was packaged very well.As usual Amazon was a great resource for me to turn to.

Sadly, this doesn't deliver for the general reader - a dry and dusty academic language fails to communicate the passion that much of this art should inspire in the viewer. Controversial, disturbing, socially relevant stuff that deserves better advocacy. Reading this you'd think all the art was pretty worthless. This Thames and Hudson series varies hugely in quality - avoid this one though.

第二次大戦後現在に至るアメリカ美術の動向を俯瞰出来る最良の一冊と考え,美大生に一読を勧めます。第二次大戦後に米国は政治的経済的に世界をリードする大きな存在となりましたが、それは美術の分野でも同様でした。かって、印象派絵画やピカソ、マチスなどのフランス美術が世界を風靡していましたが、戦後のジャクソン・ポロックを初めとする抽象表現主義（本書中ではNew York Schoolという呼び方がされています）が台頭すると米国美術は衰退したヨーロッパ美術に急速にとって代わることとなりました。それ以来今日に至るまで、米国は美術界において主流を占めてきています。本書では何々主義というカテゴリーではタイトルをまとめていませんが、New York School（抽象表現主義）から始まり、フランク・ステラ、ロバート・ラウシェンバーグ、ジャスパー・ジョーンズ、ポップアート、アッセンブラージュ、、ミニマリズム、コンセプチュアリズム、アースアート、フェミニズムアートなどを経て現代の先端テクノロジーアートまでの流れを網羅してします。マルセル・デュシャンは別格として、ジョセフ・ボイスやフラクサス、最近のNew British Artなど重要な欧州美術の存在があることは承知の上で、まず主軸となるアメリカ美術の流れを把握することは美術を学ぶ者にとっては重要と考えます。私がかって在籍していた英国の美大では戦後から現在に至る美術の流れを把握するための系統的なカリキュラムが2学年から始まり、この流れを知っていないと他の学生と全く話が出来ませんでした。私が日本の美大生や卒業生に聞いた範囲では、戦後の世界美術の流れについて講義を受けたことはなく、美術史の講義としてはその教師の得意とする狭い分野だけで系統的なカリキュラムというのは存在しなかったということでした。そもそも将来アーチストとしてあるいは美術館やギャラリーのスタッフとして現代美術に携わろうという人達がこのような美術の流れについての広範な知識を身につけることなしにプロとしてやっていけるのかどうか疑問に思います。とりわけ、大学で美術を学んでいる学生にとっては、どのようなコンセプトを形成して作品を作ってゆくかを考える際に、その基盤として現代美術の流れを把握しておくことは非常に重要ではないでしょうか。大学で教えてくれないのであれば、自分でやるしか無いわけで、そのために本書は重要と思われます。日本語の同じような本は出ていないと思いますし、本書は未だ和訳されていないはずです。英語の美術書（特に評論など）はセンテンスがやたらと長くて意味を把握しにくかったり、辞書にない単語を多用したりなど読みにくいものが多い（洋の東西を問わず難しく書くことが高級と考える傾向があります）のですが、本書の英語は素直で読みやすいことも推薦する理由です。どうぞ、チャレンジのほどを。なお、読み出したら途中で投げ出さずに最後まで読まれることをお勧めします。本書を読み終えて、更にヨーロッパなどのより広い地域を含めた同様の本を読みたいという方には、"Movements in Art since 1945" by Edward Luice-Smith, Thames & Hudson (World of Art, 1995)をお勧めします。
