This figurine belongs to the class of high porcelain retired figurines. Created in 1970 by widely-acclaimed Spanish sculptor Fulgencio Garcia, it was retired in 1992 and listed in Lladro History catalog as item 01014519,” Flamenco Dancers”. This figurine is another illustration of Fulgencio Garcia’s genius in portraying traditions and intricacies of Andalusian culture due to sculpture accuracy in presenting original Flamenco dancing outfits and Flamenco dancing movements. We bought it in 1972 in Madrid from a Lladro store. Since then it has been a permanent accessory of our home, never moved to any other address. It is in excellent condition (no chips, cracks or scratches, etc). It is equipped with the original Lladro-produced wooden base painted in gold with green velvet top fitted with the figurine foundation. Figurine subject, Flamenco dance (El baile flamenco) is known for its passionate fervor, proud poise, artistic movements of the arms and body accompanied with forceful rhythmic stamping of the feet. The most popular dance style “Classical flamenco" sculpted in this figurine originates from a traditional Spanish dance, Seguidilla. It is danced in a proud and upright manner displayed in this figurine. To wit, señorita’s back is poised in a majestic arch with tightly held body. With their arms extensions and movements, both dancers remind an assured grace of a classic ballet dancer. (As a matter of fact, most flamenco dancers are trained in classical ballet). Also, the frilly, voluminous spotted dress of the señorita is derived from a dress style worn at the annual fair in Seville which takes a week festivity following the Easter holiday. Her dancing partner wears escuella bolero, a graceful and balletic form of the traditional bolero. The figurine portrays quintessential flamingo dancing pattern called Llamada when a dancer signals a forthcoming change of rhythm or the next section of the dance or the dance closing (cierre).
