More Than They Promised: The Studebaker Story

I agree - the definitive work
This is an excellent book to help you understand the growth and downfall of Studebaker. I could fault none of his reasoning regarding Studebaker's decline which seems very even handed. I get irritated with automobile books that are written by admirers who do not want to consider unflattering truths. This was informative, well presented and refreshing!

Great Information
Although my husband's father was a Studebaker dealer, and he was a mechanic working for his father by the age of 14, he is learning so much from this book. He is not an avid reader, but he is totally loving all of this information.

Fascinating. A deeply penetrating look into the hows and whys of Studebaker's demise. An important study in American History.
I was fascinated by this account of Studebaker. Superbly researched, the author navigates the complex web of personalities, market forces and government action that produced Studebaker's demise. Credit is given to the often heroic efforts of those who stepped in to try to keep the company solvent, yet how their own hubris and soft-on-labor policies persisted even after several near-misses with insolvency. Equal credit is given to the brilliant engineering produced without the cash reserves of the big three.Lost on many is the fact that Studebaker was America's oldest vehicle manufacturer at the time, yet its board of directors chose to give up. Should be required reading for business school MBA's.

If you are interested in the Studebakers this is the book for you.
If you are interested in an impartial and informative look at the Studebaker family and products from wagons through automobiles and why they eventually failed this is the book for you. It reads well and keeps you interested. I have passed it along to others who have enjoyed it as much as I did.

Best Studebaker Book
This is by far the best of my books on Studebaker. The only reason for not 5 stars is that the pictures are terrible quality. Excellent chapter on several reasons why Studebaker failed. One reason not mentioned was "mob psychology". There was always know it alls condemning Studebaker though they never owned one and most never drove one.
