it's a good size and they have some room to play
For a Chinchilla, it's a good size and they have some room to play. Chinchillas won't pee on the wood ramps (they just don't, it's like they're potty trained), only on the wood shavings that you put on the bottom, so i never had a problem with smell or ease of cleaning. I would recommend for a Chinchilla, but it sounds like it's no good for rats. The hut was a little small so we replaced it. Overall, it was a great home for a few years and our pet was happy :)

False Advertisement beware!!!
False Advertisement! shows pictures of what u get with it, wheel, food bowls, hanging toy, potty, Hay house! None of which comes with it! it comes with a wicker ball that isn't even in the picture! I'm very disappointed! Returning it as soon as possible, which I have to wait 2 business days to even return it! I can't even shop for another one until I get my return!

Being nice with 2 stars.
Not worth the money. My wallet and my 2 girl rats deserve better. 2 Stars are generous.I do like:1. The size. The cage fits nicely in my small classroom and the girls have plenty of room to run, play and climb.2. The wooden skirt base. Looks nice while covering the deep plastic tray.I do NOT like:1. The locks on the doors are AWFUL! NOT user friendly and easily bent. I don't worry about students getting the girls out because it's near impossible for adults to open and close the doors. AWFUL!2. The wood. Thought just maybe the wood would be good. Nope. It just retains urine and odors. My girls are litter trained now, but soaked the wood plenty before settling on a lower corner of the plastic pan. What to do now? The wood is coming out and going in the trash. Adding bird climbing/perching ropes, hammocks and boxes. As for the locks...I'll just deal and silently curse each time I open and close the doors.

Not as bad as you would think.
I will say that you should probably take into consideration how cleanly your animal is. It is certainly not a good idea to have wooden housing for any animal that marks its territory, like RATS. However…I have little issue with this since I line everything in fleece. I do not like how narrow the extra shelves are and did have a young rat fall from the top ladder. They seem to like everything fine, but I am sure they will be much happier when everyone is joined in my Critter Nation Double (best cage EVER). Just waiting on that good ole' neuter. I have only had the cage for 6 weeks and will certainly updated my review if things change.

Great cage, really
Great cage, really. Spacious, have nice wooden shelves: great for 2 rats. some of you here complained that your rats chewed through plastic bottom part; I have not had this issue, though I housed my rats in this cage for a whole year. wooden stand is a useles/unnecessary feature though. I would definitely recommend this cage, would consider buying another one in the future. I paid significantly less for it Pet Smart though

At first I thought this cage would was perfect for my daughters two female rats
At first I thought this cage would was perfect for my daughters two female rats. They seem happy with the amount of space, and the research I did said that the plastic/flat surfaces were better than than the wired. I feared that the rats would destroy any plastic inside the cage, but was assured by the salesperson at Petsmart that the plastic bin would be fine because rats do not typically dig down a chew. Either we have atypical rats, or she was completely misinforming me, because its 3 months later and we have big holes in each corner of the cage and a 9 year old who is having panic attacks that her beloved rats will be escaping. I also have the problem of the wood retaining a smell. Regardless of how "nice" it looks in the picture after about a week of the rats living in the cage the wood turns into a stained mess. I made the mistake of not keeping the box, and cannot find any contact info for the company. Judging by similar complaints, they wouldn't do much to rectify the situation anyway. Now I am purchasing a Martin's cage, which seems to be built stronger and just about the same price. Their customer service seems to be better equipped to deal with my concerns. The rats will be vacationing in their smaller condo while we wait for the delivery. This cage may be fine for hamsters or gerbils, but it is not a rat cage as depicted by the picture on the box.

Lasted 3 months
If you're looking for a RAT cage, this probably isn't the best choice. As an amateur rat owner, I got this because I thought it would be safer for my first two ratties then the plastic cages and it looked nice as well. But after three months (even AFTER lining the shelves and ramps with towels and fleece) the smell of rat urine was becoming strong and I figured out it was soaking into the wood. I have upgraded to a cage with plastic shelves. Skip this frustrating step and spend the extra to get a cage with plastic shelves (or skip that one too and get a Critter Nation, which I plan to get very soon)

TERRIBLE
Bad. Just Bad. POOR design. I bought it because the guy at a Pet Store said it was good, but it's pretty terrible. The rats pee on the wood and it retains the pee and the smell. They have started to chew the plastic tub and have formed a nice hole that they will soon be able to squeeze out of (we have bought another one). All in all, TERRIBLE rat cage. Get a wire one. This one is not good and I'm sure it's not healthy for your rats to be eating plastic.
