Solved a 60hz hum problem with a Zoom H4N recorder
I don't know if there are any transformer(s) or other electronics in this adapter, or whether it's "just" a cable to cable pin out changing a TS instrument cable to an XLR balanced cable - but I had a real problem lately while going direct into a Zoom H4N from an acoustic guitar's passive pickup (happened to be a McIntyre Feather, but that appears irrelevant). When the Zoom was battery powered - no problem. When using the Zoom (not a knock-off) power adaptor (5v), a 60hz hum was loud and clear. The adaptor and cable checked out - so it was some kind of electrical field or other EMI interference that was created when the Zoom was plugged in with the adaptor.Running the chain through an amp would eliminate the hum, but using a DI did not. Finally tried using this adaptor in the chain - so guitar jack 1/4" TS cable to this adaptor, then the XLR male into the Zoom recorder, and voila no more hum. If just wire connections then some grounding-type function occurs when using this adaptor.I've now put it in the Zoom recorder case and will have it whenever using the recorder with the adaptor. 60hz hum can be a bear to chase down, and I'm quite happy this defeated it! Quality built product.
