All the hits from the original masters in a no-frills package.

I ordered this greatest hits collection because it is the simplest one that has all of their hit singles and has them in the order they were released. It's put out by CEMA Special Products, a division of EMI which owns all the original master tapes so you know it's the best source material available. The remastered sound is excellent as is usually the case in this EMI series. It's a budget series with no frills so there is no booklet at all, with the back of the cover insert left blank. It's just the hits without bonus tracks, which suited me well because I have all of Peter & Gordon's albums on CD's and don't need to duplicate any other songs. I could have made my own version with those but I wanted a factory CD and not a disc made from mp3's. The chronological order of the songs is important to me with most hits collections. It allows you to hear the development of the artist over time and if you are nostalgic about the songs it allows you to think about the times when you heard them new without bouncing your memory all over the place. How does it stack up with the other major hits collections? These are: The Ultimate (Disky), The Basic ("Import") and The Best of (Rhino). The Ultimate: Songs not in chronological order; three hits are missing - I Don't want To See You Again, Knight In Rusty Armour and Sunday For Tea. The Basic: Has all ten hit singles but not in chronological order. The Best of (Rhino) Has all the hits plus a couple of the singles that didn't chart high. All songs, even the bonus tracks, are placed in chronological order. Bonus tracks are well-chosen. For some odd reason the picture is of the old long-box made so CD's would fit into record shop's LP fixtures. This has been obsolete for decades. It's a regular CD like all the others but I'm afraid the weird picture will confuse some customers and prevent them from buying it. The Rhino Best of is the clear top choice for anyone wanting a Peter & Gordon hits disc with more than their singles. The Basic is OK but I wouldn't consider the Ultimate at all because it's missing three hits; it's OK to skip Sunday For Tea, but not I Don't Want To See You Again.Peter Asher and Gordon Waller met while attending London's prestigious Westminster Boys School. They both played guitar, with Peter tending toward folk and jazz and Gordon more toward rock and roll. They began playing together at school, then in coffee houses and clubs where they were discovered by Norman Newell, an EMI Artist & Repertoire man. They were a big part of the first wave of the British Invasion in America and the first to hit #1 after the Beatles (on June 27, 1964 for one week between Chapel of Love by the Dixie Cups and the Beach Boys's I Get Around). They were also not from Liverpool (though neither was the Dave Clark Five) but had a strong Liverpool connection in Peter's sister, Jane Asher, who was famously Paul McCartney's girlfriend throughout most of the 60's. This was played up by their label and the press and gave them the distinct advantage of getting extra songs written by Paul (though always listed as Lennon/McCartney per their agreement). These included A World Without Love, I Don't Want To see You Again and Woman (written by Paul as "Bernard Webb").Peter and Gordon did write songs as well but they weren't strong enough to be singles and ended up as album tracks. Having to rely on others for hits (Del Shannon wrote I Go To Pieces, Buddy Holly had written True Love Ways, and Phil Spector had composed To Know Him Is To Love Him) made them too dependent on happening on good material and as time went by, people began to expect artists to write their own material. Still, they lasted to the Spring of 1967, a pretty good run for an early British Invasion Group. With a high voice and a low they were often compared with the Everly Brothers and that shows in some of their album tracks. But they still had their own unique sound with Peter's high reedy voice and Gordon's unusually deep throaty baritone creating a spacious sound that was usually amplified with the use of echo. their songs had a strong folk component and also included pop, old rock'n'roll songs, R&B and even songs from movies. All in all Peter & Gordon were a continual presence in the mid 60's and put out some memorable singles.
