Over the River and Through the Wood: The New England Boy's Song About Thanksgiving Day

A lovely book with beautiful pictures. Each page contains a verse from L. Maria Child's poem, and the illustrations tell a story within the story. The mood is reminiscent of an 1800s Thanksgiving, complete with snow and period-piece clothes.We like the story text itself--beautiful language, poetic, gives much for the imagination. The pictures follow the story, as the sleigh leaves town, goes over the frozen river, up a snowy hill to a New England house nestled in the woods. My favorite is the one where Grandmother sees the children arriving.The only thing I dislike is that some of the pictures are a bit shadowy. However, the attention to detail is great, the illustrations seem like a movie, and the charm and beauty make this a favorite bedtime story.I'd recommend it. :-)

Love this book! The only "problem" is that the story is catchy and gets stuck in my head. I sing it to myself all the time. :-) Love the pictures too. Everyone in my family enjoys this story!

I have sung this song a thousand times in my life and didn't know it was about Thanksgiving. Living in New England, around the corner from where the original poem/story book was actually written, made the pages come to life. The illustrations are beautiful and fun. We loved it and I will continue to pull it out for the month of November.

My girls LOVED this book (ages 2 and 6). I sand the words/lyrics like they go in the song and my girls made me read it about 16 times in the first two days. They couldn't get enough of the illustrations and Mommy singing a book to them. It's such a wonderful book -- my childrens librarian mother reads this every year for her kids. It's a classic and not to be missed.
