In general, players collect train cards, claim routes on the map, and try to connect the cities shown on their tickets. In more detail, the game board shows a map of the United States with certain cities being connect by colored paths. Each player starts with four colored train cards in hand and two tickets; each ticket shows two cities, and you're trying to connect those two cities with a contiguous path of your trains in order to complete the ticket. On a turn, you either draw two train cards from the deck or discard train cards to claim a route between two cities; for this latter option, you must discard cards matching the color and number of spaces on that route (e.g., two yellow cards for a yellow route that's two spaces long). If you connect the two cities shown on a ticket with a path of your trains, reveal the ticket, place it face up in front of you, then draw a new ticket. (If you can't connect cities on either ticket because the paths are blocked, you can take your entire turn to discard those tickets and draw two new ones.) He loves it, but I have modified the game a bit to account for his age. For instance, we play his turns together, which means there's less strategy since I know exactly what routes he's trying to travel. The ticket cards have icons on them representing the cities, so that helps a lot, since he cannot read yet, but he can match the images on the cards to those on the board. Overall, I'd say this is a stretch board game for a 3 year old, but totally possible. It helps that my toddler loves trains, so this game holds his attention. **Q: Is this too young for a child turning 10?** A: Yes. I bought this as a Christmas present for my daughter last year (when she was 9), b/c she was hesitant to try "real" Ticket to Ride. We played this "Junior" version exactly ONCE. The "light went on" for my 9-year-old, as I suggested there really wasn't that much more "complication" in the "real" TtR. She then tried TtR, and loved it. We have all the expansions, etc., and play it regularly--and she beats me most of the time . . . ! So after playing the "Junior" version ONCE--we took it to McKay's (used books & games, etc.) and sold it. My advice is, if your child is "turning 10"--then go ahead and get the "regular" Ticket to Ride; I definitely recommend the "1910" expansion as well, particularly to get the "full-size" train cards. The analogy that I have seen is that the Days of Wonder and First Journey are comparable to traditional Monopoly and Monopoly Jr. It takes less time to play, is less complicated but the strategy of the game is the same.
