It Takes A Thief: The Very Best Of Thievery Corporation

'Best of' collection from a great downtempo artist
One of the best contemporary downtempo / lounge artists out there, and still going strong. This is their Best Of collection from several years ago - a good selection of some of their best work, and a good introduction to them for newbies. Thievery Corp is really more of a full album artist, not a singles band, and since each of their records has a unique vibe, this is a slightly different listening experience, but still sequenced well and a great disc.

A Fine Sampler
Attending their live show last month at the Greek Theatre at Mount Hollywood, I was asked how I heard about Thievery Corporation. Since the group never signed with a record label, there is no promotion of the group, no bus banners, no billboards, no promotion by Viacom on MTV. All of their fans heard about the cooperative through word of mouth. In my case, it was a co-worker who tuned me into their sound. And what is the Thievery Corporation sound? This is what you would like to be listening to at a coffee house or cafe while talking with your friends or your loved one. It's that simple. This Amazon-exclusive compilation (at a great introductory price) is the perfect way to get their flavor.Thievery Corporation cycles through female vocals, reggae, and a smattering of rap guest vocalists. My favorite singer is Lou Lou, her singing on "Sweet Tides" is wondrous. Their most famous track is "Lebanese Blonde", sung by Pam Bricker. Someone call Heisenberg, many tracks reference drug use, which is not uncommon if you're listening to the group from an Amsterdam kaffee haus.Once you have these tracks rolling around in your mind, I recommend following up with their last album, 2011's "Culture of Fear". The album has a powerful vibe on how we have changed our lives to live by terror alerts and homeland security. As Mr. Lif notes in the title track:Seems to me like they want us to be afraid, manOr maybe we just like being afraidMaybe we just so used to it at this point that it's just a part of usPart of our cultureSecurity alert on orangeIt's been on orange since '01 G,I mean what's up manCan't a brother get yellow manIf you like what you hear, try "The Richest Man in Babylon", "The Mirror Conspiracy", and "The Cosmic Game". You won't be disappointed.

Nice compilation
If you have the whole collection of the band you can skip it. If you somewhat like the band, this is a good an only album to have.

I'm enjoying for whatever that's worth
I'm not exactly a music snob nor expert so bear that in mind. I'm also a nerd- I listen to a lot of French music. It's ok, even the French make fun of me. But, I do love the Hotel Costes and Gotan Project CDs which this is remniscent of. It's great background groovy/lounge music.

Is Great
Their best, for sure. The intention was purchasing one track and I ended up with the album. It's great.

WOW, stunning sound quality and recording. A must have reference recording.
I normally avoid compilations but hearing this on a streaming service I just had to have those rich sinuous Thievery Corporation vocal tracks in one place. My faith was not misplaced. This is an awesome recording, indeed this has to be one of my desert island recordings. It is so tight, clear and dynamic. The depth of presence and emotion captured in this recording places it in my all time top 10, maybe even top 5.A must have recording for both the sound quality and the music.I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile. • Clarity – Stunning, fabulous dynamic range • Channel separation - excellent • Channel balance – superb, staggering • Sound Stage – fabulous, rich, detailed, sinuous, deep intriguing and complex. You could drown in this recording. • Distortion – Non audible • Compression – Non audible tremendous dynamic range • Atmosphere – the heavy use of echo and reverb makes this a very atmospheric recording. However to work absolute clarity is required and this recording has it in spades • Bass – low frequencies – deep, tight, controlled, thunders and thumps but totally controlled • Treble – high frequencies – superb soars magnificently • Vocals – WOW if only all recordings were this goodAs a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse.Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.

Thievery Corporation
Thievery Corporation is an American band, their music style mixes world musical elements of dub, acid jazz, reggae, Indian classical, Middle Eastern, hip hop, electronic and Brazilian such as bossa novaHaving bought the groups 2014 Saudade album which I loved, I was keen to listen to some of their back catalogue. This album does indeed offer a mixture of different sounds and cultural influences.I understand this style of music fits into the term ‘Lounge genre’. They started a new wave of electronic lounge music in the late 1990’s with their unique sounds & productionsThis album brings together their biggest and most successful career-defining productions, with 16 hand-picked songs, all featured on one compilation The album is a good introduction to the band’s world influenced musical styles. I have to say that I personally don't like all the music offered here, but still there are far more hits than misses.
