Ladysmith Black Mambazo - The Warner Bros Collection

Inspiring South African choral music.

I had seen Paul Simon's interview and show on his album "Graceland" on PBS. And I saw the group called Ladysmith Black Mambazo. I was absolutely in love with "Graceland" and after hearing this group on that tv show, I wanted to hear more. I merely picked a few titles. I'm glad I got them. Beautiful harmony and acapella.

It's almost embarrassing to admit that we went to look for this album because we first heard Ladysmith Black Mambazo on our 2-year-old daughter's Sesame Street CDs and DVDs. However, they had such an awesome sound in their duet with Kermit the Frog that we had to see if they had something other than the kids songs! This was a great first album to buy from this band. We like pretty much all of the songs, and so does our daughter.

Cudos to Paul Simon for showcasing this talented group of South African acappella singers!! I saw them on national TV when they came to the U.S. at the time the Paul Simon Graceland album was a smash hit! Big group of guys!

I first heard of Ladysmith Black Mambazo when I saw Paul Simon sing "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" on Saturday Night Live back in the 80's. I had never heard anything like it! Their songs on "Graceland" are fantastic!! Most of this CD has their classic a cappella sound which I could listen to all day!

Very good piece, but not their very best.

if you enjoy something different, entertaining, and spiritual then this CD is for you... really touches deep in the heart with a feel of emotion and empowerment for the trials and tribulations of these people and their ancestors culture... amazing and soothing in so many ways...

レディスミス・ブラック・マンバーゾは、ポール・サイモンのグラミー賞アルバム"Graceland"(1986) のバックを務め、一躍有名になったヴォーカル・ユニットです。このアルバムは"Graceland"から一曲、のこりはワーナー・ブラザーズから発表されたアメリカ・デビューアルバム"Shaka Zulu"(1987)から6曲、2枚目の "Journey Of Dreams" (1988)から5曲、3枚目の"Two Worlds One Heart"(1990) から5曲の抜粋、という構成になってます。　"Shaka Zulu"は"Graceland"の直後に発表されたため注目を集めたためか中古盤も多く、比較的容易に入手できますが、その他はなかなか見かけることがなく、このベスト盤はワーナー時代の活動をざっと俯瞰するのには便利な一枚です。　なお初めの2枚のアルバムは"Graceland"の"Homeless"の冒頭のような感じ、つまり全てヴォーカルのみのアンサンブルで、エスニックなハーモニーかつリズムが自由奔放ながら、泥臭さを感じさせない非常に洗練されたスタイルです。ただ・・・どこで次の曲になったのか、よく分かりません（笑）。ちなみに3枚目のアルバムに収録されていたいくつかの曲はロック・バンドをバックに録音されており、"Graceland"のようで、非常に分かりやすくなっています。しかし、正直言って、単調な曲調・安易なアレンジで、全然面白くない！この3枚目からの曲を聴いて、ポール・サイモンがレディスミス・ブラック・マンバーゾをいかに上手く取り込んで、あのような素晴らしいアルバムを作ったか、ということを改めて認識させられました。　なお、"Journey Of Dreams" を持ってないので分かりませんが、ここに収録されている"Amazing Grace"にはポール・サイモンが参加。これは"avaiable only on the CD version of this album" と記載されています。このアルバムの為にリミックスされたのかな？
