Decent Mid-flight Read
Halfway decent read. I picked this up at the airport bookstoore on my way with my family out of the country. While in the air my wife interrupted me while in the middle of a solid binge read. Never finished it, though. While reading I realized we had left our youngest son, Kevin home alone. I finished the book by the time we touched down in Paris.Would recommend to frustrated dads who've left a kid at home. It helped keep my mind away from the thought that my son may burn the house down.

Junior Writing Style
As a very large fan of Jim Harrison, I had higher hopes for this book. The author’s writing style is very junior varsity. He tends to jump around and miss the time and descriptions required to build key characters. The book is also very short due this. Unfortunately this book was a let down to me and a waste of money.

I love the line "Ophelia would have sunk like a stone
I'm unabashedly a McGuane fan so take that into consideration. I think he's one of the novelists they will look back upon in a hundred years (whoever THEY is in a hundred years) and say this is the guy they (whoever THEY is now) missed the boat on. This is in the top third of his novels, I think. Any judgment beyond that is a little pointless as far as I'm concerned. And, as simple as the line is, I love the line "Ophelia would have sunk like a stone."

This book makes sense and has meaning to someone who grew up in Montana and understands a little about the place and history.

Read it!
In a league with 92 In The Shade and Panama. Many fine comparisons to Jim Harrison.

Run, don't walk out to buy this book!
McGuane's use of the language and astonishing situation construction made this book a source of constant wonder and intense interest. Loved it. He's almost a Montana-based Patrick O'Brien.
