From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—Winter opens this picture book biography of Hillary Rodham Clinton by comparing the presidential candidate to three other strong women in history, Queen Elizabeth I, Joan of Arc, and Rosie the Riveter. Through straightforward text that reflects his admiration for Clinton, Winter introduces her as a "scrappy" girl who "did well in school, played sports with boys, and liked to be in charge." The author takes Clinton from an outspoken student at Wellesley College to First Lady of the United States, senator, and secretary of state, discussing her marriage to Bill Clinton and her daughter, Chelsea, along the way. Colón aptly depicts these important events using mixed-media illustrations that resemble pictures in a family album. The warm tones and soft colors personalize this story of a strong, passionate woman who works hard and is driven to succeed. Winter concludes with an author's note that describes Clinton's life in more detail and expresses why he chose to honor her: "By becoming president, she would demonstrate that a girl can grow up to be the most powerful person in the world. That's the world where I want to live." Excellent book
A very instructive moment in this book comes in Jonah Winter’s dedication: “To my mother, who has waited long enough for this moment.” It’s clear that the author is motivated by something other than political partisanship in writing this book. He’s motivated by the story of women’s progress in America. For a young child reading this book, the notion of a woman running for – and achieving – high political office would probably seem commonplace. For those of us old enough to remember when this was not the case, this book is a welcome reminder of the progress that’s been made as well as the challenges that still lie before us. One of the many valuable aspects of this book is that Winter situates Hilary’s life and career in the context of the world into which she was born (the book notes that Hilary’s mother was born before women had the right to vote) and uses various highlights in Hilary’s life to underscore how the world has evolved since then. Highly recommended.

I vote for Hillary!
LOVE the art but anything Raul Colon does is beautiful. I really like Winter's casual, breezy writing style--almost like you're talking to him. Still learn facts about Hillary & her life but not a dry nonfiction recitation of fact.
