Trioscapes

Adventurous
Second outing from Dan Briggs (of Between the Buried and Me) jazz/prog/fusion side project. I think this one is even more adventurous than the first one. Dan's bass work is really off the charts on this one, the sax work is experimental and really cool. The drummer really kills it this time around also. I enjoyed the first album, but it didn't have a lot of staying power. This one I believe tops it. The songs are well crafted and really keep you interested. It definitely strikes me as jazz from a metal guys perspective, which is great for me, as the recording has a bit more bottom end than most jazz records I've listened to (which admittedly isn't a ton). Highly recommended if you like complex and experimental music.

Digital woodshed
Very stark changes for the second Trioscapes disc. Impressive writing, telling that they had a bit more of an idea of what they wanted from this record with the experience of collaborating together on their first effort. Less workshop feel, more polish, fuller sound. Good players - Worthwhile pickup.

Wish this was more than just a side project!
I must admit I liked their first album a bit more than this one, but this is still phenomenal work. I'm loving jazz fusion lately, and I'm so glad I stumbled on these guys through their bassist from Between the Buried and Me.

If you loved their first album or any kind of progressive jazz fusion you won't be disappointed.

Good groove, poor sax
I love BTBAM and I wanted to support Dan so I thought I'd try his side project out and one song caught my attention. It is really good at parts where the bass and drums really groove together in perpetual motion, but then the sax comes in over top and ruins it. Not all the time, sometimes the sax does exactly what I think it should do (but since I'm not the artist, that doesn't matter too much does it?) and doesn't just play seemingly random trills and ascending and descending nonsense. When there is an actual melody with a groove, that's when I like this album best.

Better than that
Sax, bass, and drums. I've never heard that before but they make it work so well. Maybe they're not the Mahavishnu Orchestra in their sense of experimentation or arrogant virtuosity -- not as fast and not as exotic -- but, still, rather in that vain of experimentalism for the sake of making a different sound than anything else out there. They remind me of the punks of the mid-70s but with infinitely more capability. It's the spirit of creating a "sound" that envelopes you and has guttural dramaticism, man. The biggest difference is that it has both form and function, and not just function. Anyway, if you want that feeling of being in some club on Queen Street West, where a band you've never heard of comes on and just lets rip their own vision of musical avant garde that they made up in their basement last weekend, this is that band. Since they've made two CDs already, you can play it over and over and see that there's more behind your hazy realization of their talent after your 6th beer. These guys are better than that.
