Q: How do you remove the straw? It seems like it is on there pretty tightly

Generally, the straw will just come out with a good pull and maybe a little wiggling. If you find that that isn't working for the sprayer top you have, snipping the straw with scissors close to the cap should also enable upside-down spraying.
