Do mice fit in? "Symbols Of Love" gave a nice review (showing just how tiny they are) but never got to us if they work or not

professional pest technician here, mice can fit into holes 1/4 of an inch big and rats about 1/2.

Can an adult cat get in these?

I have had my boxes down for about two months now. My chihuahua has not been able to get into the boxes. I have several placed around my home behind my furniture, etc. and so far so good. I do watch my dog closely and supervision should never be taken lightly. Also, the mice problem has also been resolved.

what type of poison is used?

I use victor instant kill blocks. I have seen any activity around my house since putting boxes out. I have the smaller black boxes and the larger green with cement block on bottom

Will a vole actually fit inside? Looks small.

Quite possibly yes. As voles are only slightly larger then a field mouse. Couldnt hurt to buy and find out.
