Cedar does not require painting, staining, lacquering or finishing of any kind. It is rustic--and meant to be that way. I love the knotholes and rough hewn wood. It is perfect for my use. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Cute planter, but it is very rustic *by C***T on March 20, 2016* This is a small, cute planter, but when it says rustic, it is really rustic. I don't mind the rough cedar boards as this is going to be outside as a herb garden. The leg detail is cute and adds some interest. The issue that I have is that on one of the top boards, a natural knot from the board came out leaving a hole. While it may not affect the strength of the planter, I am concerned that the hole is going to attract the fingers of small children (grandchildren) who will then either get cut - the knothole edges are quite sharp - or scraped (picture 2). There is also a small space between the bottom boards, so when planting, you will need to put down some plastic so your dirt doesn't fall through.I received this item at a discount in return for my honest review. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very rustic but sturdy. *by F***7 on February 29, 2016* I don't have a lot of patio space to work with, so this planter is a good size for my needs. It is sturdy and well constructed, but has a very rough, rustic look. There are wood splinters on the ends of some boards. If you like a bit of a project, this would be a good planter to buy. I'm probably going to sand mine a bit and stain it.
