Excellent Read
This was a wonderful book. It was painful to read but a story that must be told. I highly recommend!

I couldn’t put this book down. The wisdom and grace of Nealy was remarkable and the kindness of Randy stood out. There was a great deal to be learned by the main characters.

Great Read!
A great read! Humphreys opening chapters remind me of a friend that can't wait to tell you a story; they tumble forth in an almost breathless fashion. As he comes to realize that his audience is hooked he slows, adds color, depth, and drama. Humphreys paints the post reconstruction south with all its grandeur and all is faults. He graphically explains and examines the choices that "good men" of the day had to make and then clearly shows what he feels about those decisions. I sincerely hope this will not be Mr. Humphreys only book.

review of Dead Weight
what an enticing view of the old South, at the same time raw with its cruel racism and heavy with the smothering heat of Charleston and the intriging depth of the richly detailed characters who populate this novel. This actual true story, transported into this movel, will have you feel as though you yourself had been transported to a wild and colorful trip into the deep South. This is a definite page turner, can't wait to read more from this author.

Dead Weight
Batt Humphreys' book may have been set in 1910 Charleston but 100 years later, things haven't changed all that much. The Charlestonians have become more sophisticated and subtle about their racial attitudes. The divide on the Charleston peninsular is still evident. Nealy Duncan's fate may not be much different today as it was back then.Great story. Hal Hinson, the NY reporter, and his experiences made for interesting reading!

Dissapointed
The story isnt written very well. I kept reading thinking it would get better. I skimmed alot and was sad that the killer was never identified.
