Good book with innovative ideas. Definitely recommend
This book, although older, has excellent training tips and explanations for dressage riding. The author explains dressage and horse training from the most BASIC level (even as early as foal handling) all the way up to grand master riding. There were ideas he discussed that were new to me, but were innovative and that I now employ in my own training. He describes not only how to train dressage moves, but also the basics of ground driving, backing (breaking), and starting younger horses. The only reason I give it 4 stars is that it IS a more difficult read. It is a lot of text and little photography, so it is not a quick reference guide, but I find it an easy read. I was able to read it before bed each night. So, if you're looking for good reading material and don't require step-by-step accompanying photos, I would definitely recommend. This book was actually purchased because it was recommended in a Californio training book I own. ANY rider can benefit from this book, no matter your discipline. He does not follow the typical method of utilizing all tools, unlike some of the German training methods.

A Master Equestrian
Colonel Wynmalen is one of the true master horsemen of the twentieth Century. His book is written in easily to understand language, yet its content is dense with insight. I am familiar with the writings of other famous masters and I do not think that any of these books are any more informative than the Colonel's.Over the years I've heard opinions favoring one breed of horse over another. In one instance, an associate cast doubts over the merit of one of the hot breeds. However, Wynmalen's book instructs one on how to gradually train horses in a manner that allows an equestrian to take full advantage of the horse's propensities, whether they be hot bloods or other breeds. One of the strains that runs deep in all of the master equestrians is their love and respect for the horse. Certainly, this is very true of Henry Wynmlen as well.J.B. Broussard

Great Book!
I bought this book back in the 70's and had immediate success in apply Mr. Wynmalen's techniques with my off the track Thoroughbred. This book shows that caring about the horse is not something new. Dressage: A Study of the Fine Points of Riding is a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't want their horse to be miserable - and who wants a horse who is light, responsive, and a pleasure to ride.

Among the very very best...
I read everything I can get my hands on and this ranks up there as one of the very best I've read. My only regret in my riding career is to have not had a teacher such as this!E. SchneiderGeorgia, USA

Classic text
This was the first book I ever read on Dressage, and it sparked a lifelong pursuit. I have an extensive library of classic dressage books, and this one remains my favorite. You can imagine my surprise when I went to a Ray Hunt clinic and he quoted from this book, but good horsemanship is good horsemanship. Horses everywhere would benefit if this was everyone's basic training text.

Dressage
Read as was recommended by Tom Dorrance (western horseman). Easy to understand, written with humour and as though he is actually talking to you. Talks of co-poeration with the horse NOT domination and explains about "feel". Complements Tom Dorrance's book, True Unity.
