This is a real musical treasure Lucinda Williams very first appearance (of three) on Austin City Limits, recorded October 13, 1989, and one of the highlights of the 15th anniversary season. She was riding the wave of her hit song, Passionate Kisses, that buoyant paean to desire and hope that appeared on several rock critics best of lists the year before. In fact, it seemed like everybody was wild about Lucinda. What was it about her the songs, full of raw emotion? The voice exuding longing, desire, passion? All that and more. It s not like she was the new kid on the block, having released her first record in 1979 on Folkways. But her self-titled album Lucinda Williams, the year before this performance, blew the doors wide open. Maybe music fans were starving for the kind of tell-it-like-it-is honesty that Lucinda delivers in spades. As The New York Times noted, she s got her finger on her audience s pulse, a pulse that runs straight to the heart.

Love me some Lucinda.
This is great music from a great female song writer. I bought this along with the 1998 dvd set. I like the 1989 set far better even though Car Wheels on a Gravel Road was her most successful album. I don't like Lucinda's hair being short and black. Also, Lucinda didn't sing as well on the 1998 dvd. The performances on the 1989 dvd are far more inspired. Lucinda also looks far better with the blonde or blondish looking hair. One thing I can say though that bugs me is Lucinda's blank stare. Lucinda stares off into space with a "dead eye" look. I don't know how much Lucinda's eyes are to blame and if she can even help it. I guess she gets into the zone, she is following her muse. The "dead eye" look though is not a good look. I personally don't think Lucinda can help it though. I guess it is just her eyes. She has never been a beauty but her songs are often quite beautiful. And her voice can be beautiful at times too. Lucinda is an American Treasure.

A Must Have Lucinda Performance
I've been a Lucinda Williams fan since the mid 1980's - I taped this show when it first aired on Austin City Limits in 1989 (it was aired with an outstanding Guy Clark performance, which is already on DVD - buy it! http://www.amazon.com/Live-Austin-TX-Guy-Clark/dp/B000LC5B3S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1223250297&sr=1-1). Lucinda's performance is a fantastic show with her original band that included Gurf Morlix, John Ciambotti and Donald Lindley. The original ACL show was only 25 minutes. The new DVD is listed at 74 minutes. Based on the original show, I can, with all sincerity, highly recommend this DVD to any Lucinda fan. If I could have only one of Lucinda's performances on DVD, this would be it. Whatever you love about Lucinda Williams and her music today, you will see it during this 1989 performance - a wonderful and original singer-songwriter who has remained an original artist. Gurf Morlix's guitar playing is first rate! I enjoyed the days when I saw Lucinda in the small clubs - this DVD captures a wonderful performance from that time - a must for any Lucinda fan.

Very fine dvd from Lucinda’s earlier career
If you are a fan of Lucinda’s pre car wheels band, this one is great. David Lindley on drums, Gurf Morlix on guitar make for truly fine video. As a long time Austinite and Lucinda fan I was very happy to purchase this dvd.

Lucinda Williams is no Celine Dion but she does sing from the heart. This Austin City Limit DVD recorded in 1989 captures Williams and her band in fine form. Her guitarist Gurf Morlix is such a smooth player and she has one of the best rhythm section this side of Rock and Roll in bassist John Ciambotti and drummer Donald Lindley. They provide tight and precise accompaniment. Running time is 65 minutes--just wish it could have been longer.

Brilliant Williams Concert
First this correction :This dvd is :Lucinda Williams,Live From Austin Texas,October 13, 1989Austin City LimitsRegion 2This concert is really brilliant !This show captures indeed everything Lucinda does - simple folk, gutsy blues, heart-worn country, American roots, rock and roll. She can turn from fragile to hard as stone, from one song to thenext, but no matter what she sings, you can tell she's beenthere (Terry Lichona - Producer Austin City Limits).Buy it ! You won't regret it.Quality of sound and vision is EXCELLENT !
