Will this unit operate on a 12 volt RV electrical system without the aaa batteries installed? Will the display be readable?

No, I tried this. You need the batteries. They last about a year. I does control the 12 Volt RV furnace properly when the batteries are installed. The temperature control is greatly improved versus the standard RV thermostat.

Can this be used for Gas Fireplace?

I use it for gas heating. You should be good to go for your gas fireplace.

I have several old circular Honeywell mercury thermostats which have two red wires only. Can I replace with this thermostat?

I have replaced about 25 1995-2000 model mercury t stats with this and the horizontal heat only model. Works great

I have an electic wall heater and electric baseboard heater on the same line, would this thermostat work in this case?

No, this thermostat is rated for 24 volt not 240 volt. This thermostat is not a line voltage thermostat. It would work on a gas furnace with 24 volt controls.
