Amazing product!
I have the smart shopper for over 20 years now .... My wife has knocked it off the fridge several times over the years ...it has several dents in it...BUT..it still works great!...it will take a little while for it to learn your voice and how you pronounce certain items...for instance ..you don't just say milk ..you say "whole milk" or "one percent milk"...if you have special items not in its dictionary you can type them in...then say the word and it will remember it forever...for instance...our dogs eat alot if chicken for dinner...so I typed in "dogs chicken"....now that's what I say and it comes up. This machine is the best electronic device I've ever bought...I just wish I had the money for the new one right now ...my old one still works great but I'd like the new version...my advice?..buy it and don't look back . You'll be so happy you did!

WOW!!!!
This thing is FFFANTASTIC!!! I just received mine yesterday & it's just like I thought, but better. The voice recognition works fine, besides it does give multiple choice on most things, but soooooooo idiot proof, even I can use it w/o the help of my super high tech husband's help & I am technology challenged! *LOL* I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this handy, dandy organizer to ANYONE! I just think the price is a bit high, but it is very new out there & prices will go down eventually. It's still a novelty. I bought my 1st TIVO at $500 back in 1999 when they were fresh off the market, knowing very well they'd go way down in price, but it was a gift to my husband who's in the technology business and it's often hard to wait. He gladly purchased this for me now as he was just as anxious to play with it as I was/am. Best toy in the house!!! Amazon was the cheapest I found in price, beating out target & most places that charge $149.99! I LOVE Amazon and they ship fast as well. This was sent & delivered to me within 48 hrs. & that's with free shipping. UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 13, 2007 A big help would be if they're was a way to edit a long list, as they do tend to grow, with the ability to print out a partial list of the main items for those frequent quick stops in between payday for a few items. Just an idea that I know would help me & others like myself who find themselves with a mile long list for 'grocery/errand days' and the need to make a shorter list without deleting the main one. Maybe that'll be the next, updated version. I still think it's way over priced for most.

Works Really Well, However Not Perfect
Lots of reviewers say this voice recognition software does not work at all while others talk about how great the voice recognition software is. After using it I fell that unless you are Ozzy Osbourne you should have no problems with it so long as you are saying words that are already programed into the machine. It has 2500 items programed for you & I was amazed at how easily I was able to say those items & they appear. However, I added Mountain Dew (cannot believe it was not already in there) & I had to go into the learning mode 3 times before I could get it to recognize my voice for Mountain Dew. I did the same for Red Barron Pizza & never did get it to recognize my voice. After 3 tries I gave up. The instructions do tell you not to run words together but to say them seperate such as "frozen" "Pizza", not "FrozenPizza". I was careful to do that with Red Barron but still no go. Below are my pros & cons & what'd I'd like to see for version 2.0 Pros Voice recognition software seems awesome for words already installed on the device Refills on paper are very reasonable with 3 rolls costing less than $7 at Amazon Ability to make 2 seperate list Ability to mark items with a coupon so you wont forget to present it at the register The magnet works really well & holds it to the fridge door without any worry of it falling off. I was really surprised & happy about how strong the magnet is. It is not too strong however. I mean you do not hit yourself in the forehead with the smart shopper every time you pull it off the fridge. Cons This thing is huge. I was not expecting it to be so big. At it's widest point I measured 4 1/2 inches & 7 inches long. The printer is pretty slow. I'd like to see it faster in a perfect world but it's not so slow as to be extremely annoying. Version 2.0 Make it smaller & lighter Give us the ability to put the price beside the item if we wish. Before getting this device, I'd go online to our local grocery stores & see what they had on sale because Wal-Mart will match the price. I'd write the item down & put the Wal-Mart competitors price beside the item so I could inform the checkout person at Wal-Mart how much to charge me. I cannot do this with this list maker. Great product & I am happy I bought it. It is not pefect however but well worth the discounted price.

~~ Honey Hush - Talk About a MUST HAVE ~~
I saw this on QVC and thought it was a neat idea. So I mulled over it for a couple of weeks. I decided to order it from Amazon - something about the free shipping and cheaper price that won me over. hahahahaha It was on backorder at the time and I was surprised when it just showed up one day. We love it. My hubby, who is always skeptical about my gadget purchases, was surprised when he used it. He thinks it's a neat idea - and the fact that it organizes everything by category on your list automatically is simply GENIUS!!! Press the button say the item you need to add - it shows up - select it from a list of options and it adds it to the list. When you are ready to go shopping simply press print - and it prints out the list. Easy as that..... No more sitting at the table trying to remember what you need - just add the items to the list as you can think of them. The list stays until you delete it. Plus it even lists errands - another added bonus. Need to run to the bank, atm, cleaners, lawyer's office... Another plus - is that you can add your own items, or errands, if they aren't listed. If you have problems with it recognizing your voice or speech - you can TEACH IT to understand your diction. Talk about a HOT MESS!!1 As you can tell - I LOVE THIS THING!! Best gadget I have ever bought!! Try it - you won't be disappointed!!!!

Extremely unreliable and erractic
I bount the SmartShopper in the hopes it would make it easier to maintain a list of needed items throughout the week. At first, it seemed to work, even though it almost never exactly recognizes what you say. It seemed that what you did say was in the list of three items that it 'suggests'... much of the time. Then it seemed to just nearly stop functioning. It took ten tries for it to recognize the word lasagna, which then got listed under 'dry foods' (I'd expect that to be lasagna noodles). I really wanted 'frozen lasagna'. This was not in the list of pre-programmed items. So I decided to add it. Here is where the SmartShopper really gets erratic. While I'm attempting to enter 'frozen lasagna' the focus keeps jumping back to the 'a' in the list of letters. It took me approximately twice as long as it should to enter the product. I recorded the name (in a virtually, completely quiet room). The SmartShopper would NOT recognize it. I tried ten times with no luck. So I used the 'improve recognition' feature and re-recorded the name. NO LUCK! I strongly recommend to any who accept what the 5-star ratings say about this to carefully evaluate whether you want this kind of aggravation. My reommendation - get a pad and pen and stick those to your refrigerator.

great idea! doesn't work well
Just got mine yesterday so I have not had time to work with it much, but it is no picking up my voice at all, eggs milk, did not recognize. When I finally got it to do a few items and printed the list I love the way it categorizes the items. I will work with this today, but does anyone have any ideas? Is it that sensitive that the tv needs to be off?? I will update after I tweak this some. If I had paid the original price I would have been very disappointed. It also was much larger than I thought it was going to be. But if the gadget and I can get along its a fabulous idea! I originally reviewed and only gave it 2 stars but have been playing with it, if the voice recognition was not so sensitive this would be a 5 star product. Not at the original price though, I paid 49 for it and it is worth every penny of that. If you want to add something to the list TALK to it, forget typing! just go the the main menu and go to Library settings then to library mgt and SPELL your item after each letter hit select. This works quite well, it had trouble with the letter "V", so do pay attention to the screen whe programming you own. Another thing I noticed it, it works much better hanging on the frig, it has understood the majority of commands. When I got it I was sitting at my kitchen bar holding it and talking to it and it was not picking up my commands very well, and you don't need to yell at it! Just talk in a normal voice. I love the way this categorizes the items, it prints out nicely and is very readable. This is very easy to use, so those of you technology challenged, this is extremely easy to use. Directions are well written. Overall, this is a must have in my opinion. Watch the prices as they change all the time, if you can grab it for under 50 bucks go for it. I was surprised it was much larger than I was expecting, but thats ok--I will say as much I have gotten a kick out of this thing, it never was worth the original list price!! Strong 4 star review!!! It is humourous to be walking thru the house and hearing someone saying "hamburger" to the refigerator.

Decent, for the first few months
I bought this item in February and really enjoyed it at first. It helped me keep my lists in order and very concise, so that little time and money was wasted on shopping trips. The voice recognition took a little getting used to, and the buttons were tedious to press. I was left frustrated sometimes with items I pronounced slowly and clearly, but the computer still wouldn't recognize. In those cases I would manually add the item, same as if I had a pen and paper. After a few months of decent list-making and dealing with the occasional bugs in this device (it would randomly switching between items or lists without me pressing any buttons), one morning I went to add an item and it chimed, saying "List Full." Thinking maybe I had filled the memory with manually-added items in the library, I deleted a bunch of stuff I either never bought or didn't recognize. I went back and tried to add to my list again and received the same message. I popped the batteries out for a few minutes, then tried again; same response. In the end, I can say this is a cool idea, but very expensive for the very poor quality of materials and the shoddy computer. If they ever make a "new & improved" version, they should also make it more punch-resistant....

smart shopper organizer
I loved how freindly their customer service is. it is so nice to talk to a person over the phone about this product. i have tested this product out i said stuff in it like goat cheese and butter and it seems to be working like a charm. customer service said i can only get replacemen printing paper through them or amazon.com i can not get it locally through any office supply place. i hope i dont have to buy too many printing papers through the year. i only got this product yesterday and so far i am very satisified with this product. i love how it organizes and prints my grocery lists now i am confident i dont have to go running arround all over the local grocer stores i can get all the produce i need and all the meats that i need all the dairy items i need i can be an organized shopper i am the main shopper in my family this product will be a huge blessing for me
