Arrived promptly and as advertised
Purchased this used book and it had virtually no wear or markings. Very pleased with the condition. As for content, what is there to say? Nigel Calder is one of the premier experts in the field of sailing...especially when it comes to prep and maintenance.

Not recommended, out of date, needs updating (2001 copyright).
This book is primarily for monohull sailboat yacht cruisers. If you own or thinking to purchase a Pacific Seacraft 40’ sailboat, you will love this book. The author spends much time (and not so subtlety) rationalizing and justifying his purchase of the Pacific Seacraft 40’. If you own or thinking to purchase another monohull sailboat, this book will have value, but you will have to take what is written as opinion and lessons learned from an experienced cruisers. That said there is much to take away from the author’s experience. If new to cruising or thinking of cruising, this book would be a worthwhile read. However, this book was published in 2001 and a lot has changed since then so much written is obsolete or not in-line with current technology. If the book is priced for less than $10.00 you might want to give it a read otherwise look for a more recently released book on the topics of monohull sailboat yacht cruising.

Simply, just buy it
This is the energy drink of boat books, if you only have room for one book on your boat, this should be it. If you don't have a boat but are shopping for one to spend some time on, even more reason to purchase, it will easily pay for itself and put a realistic focus on dreams.

Essential if you want to understand cruising
This book covers choosing a sailboat, equipping it, operating it, and maintaining it. Much information. Good to have at home and on my boat.

A Cruising Enclyclopedia
Calder has an engineer's eye for thoroughness and detail and clear expression. The section covering elements of naval design for a cruising boat is alone worth the price of the book. This is not the first book I've read that covers these topics but I wish it was. Many things would have been understood sooner. If you're new to cruising and are dreaming of sailing away some day, start here.

Classic Knowledge
I've been sailing for twenty-five years. Nigel Calder has been writing and publishing for about that long. All of his books have proven to be valuable insights into different aspects of sailing. This book is probably his widest compendium of useful and understandable information.Calder writes with a style that makes me feel that I am sitting in a room and listening to him. This particular book is full of good ideas and knowledge.

Great Coastal and Offshore Source of Information
This is a great book for helping any sailor, both novice or expert, about what it takes to sail coastal or offshore water. In depth knowledge of boat systems, what should be and not be on your boat and what to look for in a cruising boat. You can't do much better if you're looking for a book about blue water sailing.

older dated quality book
Calder's book was excellent in its day. It is extremely thorough and comprehensive. Unfortunately, it is 20 years old and needs a revision since some of its contents are very outdated.

Terrific assortment of highly useful information from an industry guru
A terrific compendium of things to know/do/think about when it comes to cruising or for that matter just sailing a boat (much of it could be applied to powerboating as well). Nigel has done it and lived it. Aside from being an exceptionally good writer (as in: concise, interesting to read, highly organized, always relevant) he is also the industry guru when it comes to electrical and mechanical systems on boats as well as marine diesel maintenance. His maintenance books are often used as a basis for teaching courses on those subjects.

Colour pictures with higher resolution would be a plus, but for breadth of content this book is great. I'm now much more knowledgeable about sailboats and sailing without ever having left the shore.
