In the past it used to be called Caffé d'Orzo, which simply translates as "barley coffee". In fact, this hot beverage is an excellent healthy alternative to coffee but perhaps "the elixir of life" is a more enticing name.Orzo Mondo (hull-free barley) belongs to the finest variety of barley. It has grains that naturally have no hull, or outer husk. Through a strict production chain overseen by Tre Mori, the barley is sown and harvested in the Italian countryside, then only the top grade harvest is selected, roasted at a low temperature, ground and packed. Hull-free barley is a noble cereal and a functional food due to its high content of beneficial substances, especially soluble fiber such as Beta-Glucans and Tocols. Beta-Glucans help reduce the amount of cholesterol and glucose in the blood, while Tocols are natural antioxidants that fight the action of free radicals that cause early cell aging.This innovative product was actually enjoyed regularly in Egypt during the era of the pharaohs. At some point during the Dark Ages it disappeared, and has only now been rediscovered by Tre Mori, in partnership with major Italian research universities.
