Thumbnail view of St Augustine's theology.
St Augustine has been considered a leading if not the leading Catholic theologian. He lived in the late third and early fourth centuries. In 50 pages, Dr Marshall gives a clear summary of St Augustine's thoughts on the nature of grace, original sin and the heresies of Donatism, Palagiism, and Jansenism. The reading was so captivating that I am about to start reading translations of the original works of St Augustine.

Wikipedia is a better bet!
This pamphlet, besides not being quite 50 pages, is poorly edited with many omitted prepositions and being verbs. Furthermore, the author has repeated a whole paragraph twice on pages 31-32. Not much new material here that Wikipedia couldn't provide. Certainly not worth $15.

good first read about Augustine
This is a well-written, and easy to read summary of the life, works, and church issues of St. Augustine of Hippo. It is very faithful to the traditional Catholic church view of St. Augustine and his teachings. I enjoyed reading this short work. I have some experience with the life and work of St. Augustine, and Dr. Taylor Marshall, oversimplifies and to some degree glosses over two issues worthy of greater expansion in clarification. The first concerns St. Augustine's position on human sexuality. Dr. Marshall presents the Catholic church's "smoothed over" analysis which affirms that human sexuality is good. My opinion is that, for whatever reason, St. Augustine remained deeply conflicted about his sexuality and human sexuality even sexuality in marriage. The second issue is about Pelagianism. Pelagianism is traditionally taught as a heresy that denies the necessity for divine assistance in life and for salvation. I doubt that St. Augustine was completely fair to Pelagius. My view is that Pelagius focuses on human goodness, basic human goodness. And Augustine focuses on basic human wickedness. I think the Catholic Church has also corrected Augustine by maintaining in these days at least that all creation including human beings were created good and that we are now in a fallen state. With divine grace we are returned to our original goodness.

A Short Primer on St. Augustine That's Well Worth Reading
Just finished Dr. Taylor Marshall's new e-book "St Augustine in 50 Pages." It was a nice overview of the saint's life and work. As someone who's read Augustine's "Confessions" several times and the entire "City of God," I still learned quite a bit from Dr Marshall's short treatment. If you're completely unfamiliar with Augustine's work or if your a seasoned Augustine devotee, this book is worth checking out.
